Europasat Connect 30Mbps Satellite Broadband to 1000 Welsh Premises

Friday, Feb 5th, 2016 (12:01 am) - Score 1,061

Cross-platform Satellite broadband ISP Europasat, which offers a choice of space-based Internet access services from operators like Eutelsat (Tooway), Avanti (HYLAS) and SES (Astra), has today announced that over 1,000 homes and businesses in Wales have already taken their service.

The ISP tends to focus its efforts on isolated rural locations, specifically those left neglected by the country’s Superfast Cymru project that is separately working with BT to make “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) connectivity available to 96% of Wales by the end of 2016; an additional 42,000 premises should follow by June 2017 (here).

Meanwhile Europasat’s service in Wales has no doubt benefited from the Access Broadband Cymru (ABC) scheme, which offers grants to help cover the setup cost of an alternative network solution. The subsidies are only available to areas where 30Mbps+ speeds are not yet possible (full details).

Lindsay Barton, Golden Kite Solutions Ltd. (Powys), said:

“We loved the beautiful rural location of our office, but being situated over ten miles from the BT exchange meant that we had to suffer broadband download speeds of around 300 Kbps, which seriously slowed down how fast we could offer services and respond to customers. We thought that we would have to move, but then we discovered that we could install a satellite broadband service and get it funded by Welsh Assembly Broadband Support Scheme to boot!

We are delighted with the service and impressed by the recent developments that will enable us to take additional services and increase our bandwidth as our business expands.”

Europasat are of course keen to promote their service and include a link to a page with details of the relevant subsidy scheme: https://www.europasat.com/lp/broadband-cymru-voucher-scheme/. But if you want their 30Mbps package then, even with free install and hardware, it’ll still hit you with a monthly rental of £59.99 and for that you only get a small usage allowance of 30GB.

Side Note: Europasat’s press release states that the above coverage figure of 96% equates to “superfast” speeds of 30Mbps+, although we should clarify that the scheme itself has not been nearly so specific and we think the figure may ultimately end this year at something closer to 89-91%.
