A new survey from Resume.io has attempted to rank 482 UK towns to identify the best ones for home working (WFH), which examines various different factors (e.g. broadband performance and coverage, house prices, WiFi hotspots, life satisfaction, cost of living etc.). Overall Llandough in Wales came top with a score of 80.9 out of 100.
Remote working away from the office is of course nothing new to modern business culture, although the COVID-19 crisis has understandably caused it to become much more common in 2020 and many expect that trend to continue (i.e. after businesses have adapted and seen the benefits).
Over the past few months we’ve seen a number of surveys that have attempted to identify the best locations for home working in the UK (here, here and here) and most of them tend to come up with radically different answers, which is mostly due to the differences in how they score and what categories they include.

In that sense the latest survey is no different, although unlike other studies we like the fact that, on the connectivity front, Resume.io looks at more than just average broadband speeds and also considers the availability of both 30Mbps+ and 300Mbps+ capable ISP connections in an area. Each category is also given a score weighting, with broadband rightly playing one of the biggest overall roles in the final score (as it should be).
The survey also scores other areas including Cost of Living, Life Satisfaction, Anxiety, Schools, Parks, Coffee shops, Restaurants, Delivery, Libraries and WiFi Hotspots. The data from each is converted into a simplistic score from 1 to 10 for each town, with scores that have been given a higher weighting (e.g. broadband) playing a bigger role in the final total.
One big caveat is that their broadband related data hails from Ofcom’s Connection Nations 2019 report, which is now more than a year out of date.
The full results can be accessed here and we’ve put a smaller summary below, which only displays the digital connectivity aspects but does still include the overall score for all categories. Hard luck to those in Newmarket (West Suffolk) as they sit right at bottom of this table in position 482 on a score of just 19.3 out of 100 and that’s tied with Windleshamin (Surrey Heath). Individual category scores below are out of 10.

Despite being for “towns”, we also note that this list includes some villages too.

No, it doesn’t! Llandough Broadband Avg Speed is 6.9
6.9 is the score for that category out of 10, not Mbps, they’ve made it a bit confusing in that respect.
@Mark Jackson: Thanks for the clarification.
Now see the list is not in order, it’s the raw data, chart shows ranking!
It is in order of the overall score, which is the same as their chart.
Not a single town in Norfolk even makes the cut. Somewhat surprising as there are various small towns with their own FTTC-enabled exchange that should be averaging over 50Mbps availability, somewhere like Holt should qualify going by the Thinkbroadband maps.
I guess they may be using mean speeds rather than median, lots of outlying properties and villages in Norfolk parish areas that have very poor speeds.
I suspect that Kirkby Lonsdale is so high in the rankings because it ranks highly generally in “best places to live”. The town itself has very mediocre broadband (FTTC except for a medium size new development on the outskirts which is B4RN FTTP broadband. Kirkby Lonsdale’s broadband average is probably higher than average because the villages completely surrounding it do have B4RN Gigabit FTTP. For some strange reason the residents of Kirkby Lonsdale town have still not yet pulled their collective fingers out to do their own B4RN community project. What a pity… If you move there choose one of the nearby villages rather than the town.

how condescending of you to makes such assumptions about residents of kirby lonsdale
If there is one thing to take out of this November 2020 article its that out of approximately 1186 towns in the UK, only 482 have an average broadband speed of least 50Mbps!
TBB will know know the numbers!
The stats for Syston are way off. They have Virgin FTTP across the whole town. They can get 600 megabit. Confusing!
Can get and average speed are very different.
