UK ISP Hyperoptic, which is deploying a gigabit speed “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband network to large residential buildings (MDUs), office blocks and houses in cities, has reached a new agreement to rollout their service to the social housing residents of Waltham Forest Council in East London.
At present the provider’s broadband network is already present in parts of 43 UK towns and cities, across well over 400,000 premises (we haven’t had an updated figure on this for a very long time), and they have previously expressed an ambition to cover 2 million UK premises by the end of 2021 and then 5 million by the end of 2024 (mostly in urban areas).
Meanwhile, the latest deal with Waltham Forest Council means that over 2,600 additional properties are due to be connected in Phase One (the rollout for this has already started) and we assume more will follow, although Hyperoptic hasn’t set out any details for their future phases.
To further support the community, the ISP will also provide complimentary broadband connections to 13 community hubs, which means local residents can access free internet services in those areas. It is also working with the council to gift a number of free laptops alongside these complementary connections.
Liam McAvoy, Hyperoptic’s MD of Business Development, said:
“The last year has demonstrated the acute disadvantages people can face when they live in digital poverty. Hyperoptic is passionate about democratising access to the best broadband infrastructure on the market. We believe that everybody deserves to enjoy the opportunities that are enabled through having a hyperfast service, which can always be trusted. We are thrilled to add Waltham Forest to a growing list of council partners, and we look forward to getting their residents into the connectivity fast lane.”
One other benefit for residents will no doubt be Hyperoptic’s new Fair Fibre Plan, which enables customers on specific means-tested benefits to get access to discounted rates. For example, with this plan, its 50Mbps broadband-only service on a monthly rolling contract is available for only £15 a month. Faster ‘Fair Fibre’ packages are also available, albeit at a higher price.
