UK ISP YouFibre has announced that the first customers can now connect to their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the two towns of Barrow-in-Furness (Cumbria) and Houghton-le-Spring (Tyne and Wear), which has been built by network partner Netomnia.
Netomnia is currently working to make their full fibre broadband ISP network available to 1 million UK premises by 2024 (here and here) and part of that involves spending £12m to cover 40,000 premises in Barrow, as well as £10.5m to reach 35,000 premises in Houghton. Several civil engineering firms, such as Light Source and MAP Group (UK), are supporting this work.
Customers in these locations can typically expect to pay from £20 per month on an 18-month term for their unlimited 50Mbps package (£22 post-contract), which rises to just £50 if you want their top 1000Mbps plan. Such low pricing is clearly intended to help grow take-up. A static IP address, Mesh Wi-Fi and phone service are optional (mesh WiFi is included by default with their 1000Mbps plan).
All of YouFibre’s packages include unlimited usage, symmetrical download and upload speeds, a Wi-Fi router, a pledge of no price rises when within contract and 24/7 UK based support. And there is no install fee, activation fee or line rental.

Waiting patiently (perhaps not) for go live in Ashford, Kent. 🙂
I placed my pre-order with YouFibre Sept 2021 after reading this email and a discussion with the YouFibre Area Manager. Since placing the order I have been informed by YouFibre installation was estimated October 2021, then November 2021, then March 2022, then May 2022 and now August 2022. It doesn’t exactly instil confidence YouFibre are a capable ISP.
