CityFibre UK has today announced that their long-held plan to deploy a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across the Kent (England) town of Sittingbourne, which is expected to cost £9.5 million, will finally get underway “later this year“.
At present the details are rather limited and we don’t yet know who CityFibre has contracted to conduct the build, although the plan for their “town-wide” deployment is the same as always – to reach “almost every home and business” in the location (this usually reflects a target of around 85% of premises).
As usual, CityFibre won’t be the only gigabit-capable broadband network in the area. The town is already well covered by Virgin Media’s (VMO2) network and Openreach is also deep into the process of deploying their own full fibre network across the area. Nevertheless, Sittingbourne should be big enough to support three gigabit rivals.

Anne Krausse, CityFibre’s Area Manager, said:
“We are delighted to be adding Sittingbourne to our nationwide Full Fibre roll out. In a few short months, our builders will get to work on a town-wide Full Fibre network – and we think people will be amazed by the difference it will make, both now and for generations to come. This technology will bring a whole host of opportunities for residents and businesses in the southeast and we can’t wait for them to see what is possible with strong digital connectivity.”
End.
Still waiting for any news regarding Maidstone from CityFibre.
CityFibre are a tad slow getting off the ground. They announced their build in my locale (Chichester) a year ago. Nothing much happened for six months. More recently they have been seen in the city centre pulling cable through ducts for a couple of days here and there then vanishing again. Looking at the Think-broadband instances of a CityFibre installation, not one in the whole city. Openreach went past my door two years ago, but I’ve resisted their FTTP offering since. Now taken out a FTTP contract through TalkTalk, whilst WAITING for CityFibre to go past my door. So maybe in another 18 months I’ll get what really I want…. CityFibre’s symmetric broadband.
Very frustrating.
First world problems.
As a Sittingbourner myself, glad to see this news. Openreach have a lot of areas in Sittingbourne with live FTTP and a lot of work recently deploying in other areas (mainly in the town centre currently). CityFibre will be a welcomed investment into the town.
This article confuses me cause when I reached out to CityFibre for an update on this they claim they’ve zero plans to add Sittingbourne on the roadmap anytime soon??
You might want to point them to their own rollout map:

Hi Mark, Just received this email this evening. Previously said in December this “rollout” page was incorrect and a mistake and no plans for this area – now this:
“Thanks for your interest in CityFibre. We’re building a brand new, more reliable broadband network like nothing before.
We’re pleased to tell you that we’ve started planning how we’re going to bring it to your area.
We’ll be in touch again with more details, so keep a look out for our email. In the meantime, you can learn more about CityFibre on our website. “
