Customers of Sky’s NOW (NOW TV / NOW Broadband) sub-brand in the UK, which offers an alternative TV and video streaming service to Sky’s own packages and live channels, may be pleased to learn that the app has now been made available on the latest models of Google’s TV devices and Chromecast sticks.

Until now the NOW TV app was already quite widely available, including via some popular TV brands (e.g. LG, Samsung and Sony) and Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV and Roku devices. Not to mention the latest PlayStation and Xbox consoles. But it hadn’t been able to reach on to the various Google TV devices or Nvidia Shield.

The good news is that this has now changed, and you’ll finally be able to access NOW TV on various other Google TV devices, as well as modern internet-connected TV’s from Sharp, Phillips, Panasonic, Bush, Hitachi, Toshiba and JVC.

Marina Storti, NOW’s MD, said:

“With a wealth of incredible home entertainment devices out there, we’re thrilled to be making it easier than ever to get NOW’s app and start streaming. Whether you want to watch latest Premier League derby, binge on House of the Dragon or distract the whole family with blockbusters like Sing 2, NOW and our flexible contract free memberships are just a download away.”

Customers of the streaming service typically pay from £9.99 per month for the standard ‘Entertainment Membership‘, which includes access to lots of Sky’s on-demand TV content and a number of Sky’s premium channels. But if you want to be able to watch content at even basic Full HD quality (as standard it’s just 720p), and on 3 devices at the same time, then you’ll need to pay an extra £5 per month.

The day they allow the Sky Glass app to be used on any Smart TV is the day I will sign up to them. If you are going to have it have it all is my view

I would of thought that was a 2years+ away.

Sky will want as many as possible to buy the hardware from them so they can get all the data of what you watch etc but if it’s just an app they would only be able to track via that app.

“Smart” Televisions often times have their own channel store, NowTV is fairly strict in their design and unless they can make it impossible for users to avoid adverts – err I mean protect the security of the stream to stop people downloading the sub 720p video, then they will not move on said platform.

I have individual iptable entries for NowTV because their hardware doesn’t work unless it can get adverts! (Much like my HP printer will not let the SCANNER function unless it has HP Ink installed!).

Will this be available on Netgem now?

    1. Avatar photo Martin says:

I’d guess netgem isn’t a terribly attractive platform to develop and test for TBH, due to the volume of users. If it’s Android based maybe, but I believe they whitelist devices, in order to ensure content can’t be captured and shared

Netgem isn’t Android based. The only Google certified devices in the UK are the NVIDIA Shield, Google Chromecast, Strong Leap-S1, ZYBRE OneBox, TalkTalk – New Android box, and Nokia 8000. Plus all the Android Smart TV’s.
