Fixed wireless access ISP Cromarty Firth Wireless Networks, which serves the rural area of Ardross in the Scottish Highlands, has today announced a couple of significant network upgrades. The changes will play their part in boosting local internet speeds toward ultrafast and possibly gigabit-capable territory in the future.
The first development is the availability of a new 99Mbps capable service across the whole community, which is being entirely funded by the operator’s own resources (i.e. no Government vouchers or local council funding).
The second development is the successful pilot of an ultrafast broadband connection, which is now to be made available across the Ardross network. This has been achieved by the enhancement of the Gigabit wireless backbone throughout the community and the use of 60GHz mmWave technology for the final customer link.

Apparently, the network enhancements build upon the recent deployment of a new uncontended gigabit-capable link to facilitate the filming of the BBC programme “Traitors” in 2022.
Mike Hicks, CEO of CFWN, said:
“The pilot site was specifically chosen, not only is it one of the most remote areas in Ardross, it is one of the remotest parts of our entire area of operation“.
At the time of writing, the provider’s website is still only listing their ‘up to’ 50Mbps package for £32.40 per month (installations from £299), but we assume this may change as the faster speeds become more widely available. Take note that the antenna pictured in this article is from a picture that CFWN took in 2019 and so may not represent their latest upgrades.
I’m fortunate enough to be in a CFWN area and have used their service for just over five years. Their professionalism and service shames many providers.
Speed is excellent at between 60-90Mbps and the service is great value.
I am the user involved in the pilot testing of the ultrafast network in Ardross. It’s certainly a step up and something I am very happy to have received.
Actual speeds depend on the time of day but in the night I can generally push 600-700Mbit:

I was worried about rain with 60Ghz but it’s performed perfectly, even when raining quite hard outside.
Small world, were you originally limited to 100Mb/s?
I did the setup for your house I think
Indeed, small world!
I had 30-50Mbit previously but when COVID started, they upgraded me to 100Mbit when I asked for it. Luckily, my PtMP had enough capacity 🙂
