UK ISP Gigaclear, which has so far deployed a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to 450,000 premises in rural areas (across 23 counties), has today announced that they’ve kicked off a new expansion phase in Yorkshire (England) that will see them add another 16,000 premises to the total.

Engineers will start working in Brayton this week, before moving on to Cawood, Thorpe Willoughby and Hillam later in the summer. A timetable is currently being drawn up to connect a further six communities in West and North Yorkshire, with the provider liaising with North Yorkshire County Council’s (NYCC) highways department and parish councils to help ensure any disruption is kept to a minimum.

NOTE: The operator is currently home to a total of 75,000 customers.

Assuming all goes to plan, then Gigaclear plans to start connecting their first customers on the new fibre in Yorkshire by the end of this year. The rollout forms part of the Infracapital-backed provider’s wider investment strategy, which is estimated to be worth up to around £1.1bn (here) – this aims to help expand the coverage of their full fibre network to “over” 1 million premises by 2027.

Gigaclear Delivery Director, Tony Smith, said:

“We’ve been planning our move into Yorkshire for many months so it’s great to actually get feet on the ground and begin the work. Gigaclear is committed to delivering fast and reliable broadband to rural communities across its network, many of whom would otherwise struggle to access ultrafast speeds.

Reliable and fast broadband speeds are no longer luxuries but are necessary in order for many people to live their lives fully, whether it’s working from home, streaming home entertainment or accessing the many money-saving SMART gadgets and security systems.”

Residential customers of the service typically pay from £17 a month (£40 after 18-months) for a symmetric 200Mbps broadband package on an 18-month term, and this rises to £49 (£79 after 18-months) for their top 830Mbps plan. All packages include a wireless router and free installation.

It would be nice if Gigaclear hadn’t abandoned the build in Wiltshire after months of disruption to the community!

Especially where we struggle to get more than 20mbit on copper hand in hand with multiple drop outs every day!
