Alternative network operator and broadband ISP CommunityFibre, which has deployed their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across around 1.4 million UK premises (mostly in London), has today announced that their customer base has grown to 300,000 (up from 200,000+ on 27th Nov 2023).

The provider states that they’ve seen an 85% increase in their customer base over the past 12 months as more people look to alternative networks (Altnets) for faster, more affordable fibre broadband. The company, which is backed by a finance facility of £985m, also announced it has been Ebitda positive throughout Q2.

NOTE: CF is backed by shareholders Warburg Pincus LLC, DTCP, Railpen and NDIF, and its lenders including recent backers JP Morgan and Barclays.

The announcement represents positive news, particularly as it follows closely behind the recent slowdown in network build and redundancies (here and here), which resulted in CF pivoting their strategy in order to focus on growing customer uptake.

Graeme Oxby, Community Fibre’s CEO, said:

“Having successfully grown to become the largest 100% only full fibre network in London by far, we’re pleased to announce that more than 300,000 customers have chosen to join Community Fibre for lower prices, faster speeds and a better service.

The fact that so many customers have voted with their feet and moved from the large national providers to Community Fibre demonstrates the incredible success we are having. We believe our unwavering focus on consistently delivering the best products, at the lowest prices with the best service versus all comers is the rationale behind our success.”

Residential customers of the service typically pay from £21 per month on a 24-month term for speeds of 150Mbps 300Mbps (symmetric) with free setup and an included WiFi 6 router, which rises to £56 for their top 3Gbps tier. The pricing is currently fixed if you join before 4th November 2024. At the end of your contract, your price will increase by £4 versus your last month.

CommunityFibre also offers a separate 35Mbps social broadband tariff at £12.50 a month (rising to £16.50 after the first 12-months), although their 35Mbps plan isn’t technically a true Social Tariff because it’s available to everybody covered by their network (i.e. not just those on state benefits) and we rather like that.

I hope they can get back to building out their network soon.

Yes, I am keen to try them out. Just before the build was paused at the end of last year, kit was added to a telegraph pole nearby and ‘Coming Soon!’ leaflets dropped through the letterbox. Sadly there has been no progress since.

That is a great news! So even if all customers have taken the cheapest £21 service, we are looking at £75 million annual revenue minimum, probably closer to £100m in reality. Would this be right?

      I would use a ARPU of £26..
