The boss of broadband ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP), Adrian Kennard, has warned that the UK governments new Communications Data Bill, which will expand existing internet snooping laws and force ISPs into monitoring a much bigger slice of everybody’s online activity, is “technically a nightmare” and will require providers to introduce “stupidly expensive black boxes“.

BT has, without much fanfare, rebranded its public wireless (wifi) hotspot business from BTOpenzone to the more understandable title of BT Wi-fi. The move will also bring its BTFon service together under the same name.

BT Announce UK Pilot Locations for 330Mbps FTTP on Demand Service

BTOpenreach has today announced a list of 8 telephone exchanges that will be used to conduct the first pilot of their unique FTTP-On-Demand service, which allows BT to deploy “ultra-fast” 330Mbps capable fibre optic broadband speeds to almost anywhere that their existing FTTC service has covered (66% of the UK by the end of 2014).

UPD Ofcom UK Names TalkTalk the Most Complained about Broadband ISP

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today published its latest quarterly customer complaints data (Q1-2012) for big fixed line broadband and mobile providers (i.e. those with a market share of 4%+). Sadly TalkTalk remains the ISP with most complaints but crucially they have continued to improve.

A multi-national team of scientists working out of the University of Southern California (USC) have successfully tested a new networking technology that can “twist light” to send data at a staggering speed of up to 2.56Tbps (Terabits per second)! The solution could “potentially” be adapted for use in fibre optic cables or even satellite links.

Virgin Media Ad Banned After Usain Bolt Fails to Double All Broadband Speeds

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned two online adverts for Virgin Media’s broadband service after Sky Broadband (BSkyB) complained that VM “misleadingly” used sporting icon Usain Bolt to promise that the ISP would be “doubling everyone’s broadband speeds” when in reality some customers did not benefit.
