A new Government consultation has revealed that the Data Communications Company (DCC), which is in the process of working to upgrade existing Smart Meters in UK homes with a new 4G Communication Hub (here and here), will in 2026 also launch a Virtual WAN service. This will mean that home broadband can be used to connect premises not covered by their normal wireless network.

A new survey of 3,242 UK internet users, which was conducted on behalf of Broadband Genie and supported by McAfee’s cybersecurity researchers (inc. threat intelligence data), has claimed that millions of people could be leaving their home networks open to hackers because 47% fail to change ANY of their router’s default settings.

London-focused ISP Vorboss, which has built and operates a 100Gbps speed fibre optic network for businesses in the UK’s capital city, has this afternoon informed ISPreview that long-serving company Founder and CEO, Tim Creswick, will be stepping down from the role after 19 long years.

Mobile network operator Vodafone UK has today introduced a new multi-line discount, which entitles customers to 15% off when they insure additional phones, tablets, laptops and watches. Customers can also benefit from half-price device insurance for the first 2 months, available until 11th November 2025.

Customers of mobile operator O2 may be displeased, if not surprised, to learn that the provider has today followed sibling Virgin Media’s recent increase to their existing mid-contract pricing policy on broadband packages (here), by announcing a similar hike for their own mobile subscribers.

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency, which oversees their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband roll-out and the Shared Rural Network (SRN) programme for upgrading 4G coverage in remote areas, has today published their combined annual progress report and accounts for the period 1st April 2024 to 31st March 2025. This also includes some data on the level of fraud in their programmes.

Internet provider and network builder CommunityFibre, which has deployed their 5Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 1.342 million homes (inc. 185k businesses within 200 metres of their network) – mostly in London, has today launched a new installation option – “Fibre to your Room“.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (O2) and network operator partner nexfibre, which share some of the same parentage, have today announced that they’ve once again expanded the reach of their symmetric 2Gbps speed full fibre (FTTP) network to more than 6,000 additional homes in the coastal South Wales town of Llantwit for the first time.

A recent survey of 5,014 UK adult consumers, which was conducted by Which?, has claimed that the average broadband-only ISP customer could save £100 per year by switching to a new provider – rising to £160 and £155 on Sky Broadband and Virgin Media respectively. Similarly, those who haggled saved £65 (rising to £92 and £85 respectively on Virgin Media and BT).

The Senior MD at Macquarie, Oliver Bradley, has revealed that that one of the alternative broadband networks they support, Voneus, recently completed a renegotiation on their existing £70m debt facility over the summer. The move saw existing investors inject an unspecified amount of fresh funding to keep the operator going.

Alternative network ISP Quickline, which is rolling out a new gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) and wireless (FWA) broadband network across rural parts of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in England (3-Year Rollout Plan), has just extended their fibre network to three more rural communities along the banks of the River Ouse – the villages of Swinefleet, Reedness and Whitgift. Plus Patrington, Tickton and Broomfleet in other areas.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents many of the UK’s alternative broadband ISP networks, has announced that their efforts through the previously announced Infrastructure Sharing Group (ISG) have now resulted in the creation of a new infrastructure sharing venture – supporting the use of 500,000km of “spare fibre capacity“.

Two of the largest backers of the UK’s alternative broadband networks, NatWest and Lloyds, have now scaled back new lending to the heavily indebted sector. The move follows an earlier report in August 2025 (here), which revealed that a number of banks had set aside funding to cover loans issued to altnets (now deemed unlikely to be repaid in full).

Network benchmarking firm Opensignal has reported that they’ve seen the “first measurable improvements” in their data from the recent merger between mobile operators Vodafone and Three UK, which appears to indicate that VodafoneThree is delivering some “significant coverage” improvements and “faster speeds” (mobile broadband).

American network supplier ScaleFibre, which manufactures and delivers optical fibre connectivity kit and cables to broadband operators, has announced that they’ve established ScaleFibre UK Ltd as part of their expansion into Europe. Giving digital network builders in the UK another option to consider.

Broadband, phone and mobile operator Manx Telecom (MT), which is the primary telecoms network for premises across the remote Isle of Man, has announced that their free email service (Manx.net) is to be migrated to a new platform run by Junara. But customers that wish to continue using the service will, from 21st Jan 2026, need to pay £65 a year (or £6.50 per month).

Broadband and telecoms giant BT (Openreach) has been fined a total of £9,000 at the Barrow Magistrates Court in Cumbria (England) after Westmorland and Furness Council (WFC) brought a successful prosecution against the operator for carrying out roadworks “without permits“, while also “failing to reinstate the road adequately“.
