The Home Office has launched a consultation that proposes to make a number amendments to their controversial internet snooping Investigatory Powers Act 2016, which at the end of last year ran into trouble after the CJEU found that some aspects were not compatible with EU law.

As expected the Superfast Worcestershire programme has signed a new £6.2 million extension contract with BT (Openreach), which will push their FTTP/C based “superfast broadband” network out to reach more than 5,300 extra premises (reaching 96% of Worcestershire UK by 2019).

The South Norfolk Council has teamed up with local ISP InTouch Systems, which runs fixed wireless broadband provider ITSwisp, to help them deploy a new 10Mbps+ capable network to parts of the region that won’t benefit from the existing Better Broadband for Norfolk (BBfN) project.

Cable operator Virgin Media UK has announced that an extra 16,000 homes and businesses in the County of Durham (North East England) will be the next to gain access to their 350Mbps capable broadband and TV network, with the local deployment work being set to complete by the end of 2019.

Ofcom has published their latest report into the use of media by UK children and parents, which among other things finds that around two in five parents of children aged 3-4 (39%) or 5-15 (37%) use network-level filters on their home broadband ISP. The vast majority of those find them useful.

Transport for London has reported that their recent (summer) trial of a 4G Mobile network distribution technology, which ran in Tube tunnels on the Waterloo and City Line, was a success. Tfl are now tendering for a service provider that can deploy it across their entire Tube network from 2019.

The incumbent telecoms operator for Hull in East Yorkshire UK, KCOM, has today announced the final phase of their “Lightstream” roll-out, which will extend their “ultrafast” fibre optic broadband (FTTP/C) services to cover 100% of their network area (around 200,000 premises) by March 2019.

The Scottish Government has announced that the city of Aberdeen is to receive £2m of public funding to extend Gigabit (1Gbps) ultrafast broadband connectivity to 57 “key public buildings” (e.g. schools, health and community centres), which forms part of a regional £254m investment package.
