Budget Internet and phone provider TalkTalk has today announced that it’s investing £100 million into their “on-going network upgrade programme” (TalkTalkatWork), which will be used to deliver an “even faster, safer and more reliable broadband service” by supporting free router upgrades and home engineer (BrightSparks) visits.

UPD Essex UK Sign GBP25 Million BT Superfast Broadband Rollout Deal

The Essex County Council (ECC) in England will today become the latest UK local authority to sign a major state aid supported deal with telecoms giant BT, which will allow the operator to extend the reach of its “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to “around” 87% of premises by the end of summer 2016 (the rest will get at least 2Mbps).

British Library Internet Filter Blocks Hamlet for Violent Content

The growing use of Internet filters in the United Kingdom has claimed another innocent victim after the British Library confirmed that a man whom attempted to access an online version of Shakespeare’s Hamlet was prevented from doing so because the text contained “violent content“.

The £20m Rural Community Broadband Fund (RCBF), which aims to help premises in the most rural 5-10% of the United Kingdom gain access to superfast broadband, has allowed two bids for funding in Oxfordshire (England) to proceed (note: final approval has yet to be granted).

EU Survey Finds Small Decline in UK Homes with Broadband Access

The European Commission (EC) has today published its annual E-Communications Household Survey of around 28,000 people across all 27 member states (1,308 were in the UK), which revealed that 61% of EU households now have broadband access and this rises to 70% in the UK (down by -1% Dec 2011).

The £41 million state aid supported Better Broadband for Norfolk project in England, which is a joint project between the government (BDUK), county council and BT, has revealed the next batch of 71 local communities that can expect an upgrade to superfast broadband (FTTC/P) technology.

BT Picked for GBP20m Fibre Broadband Contract in Nottinghamshire UK

The Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) has awarded its state aid supported £20 million contract for expanding the coverage of fibre optic based broadband connectivity to BT, which aims to make it’s up to 80Mbps capable FTTC network available to 95% of local premises by the end of March 2016 (the rest will get at least 2Mbps).

Do we still need a fixed telephone line? The latest ISPreview.co.uk poll of 998 website visitors has found that 64.3% of respondents would happily get rid of the phone line if it wasn’t still required for their home broadband connection (20.9% answered with “no” and 14.7% said “maybe”).

Wifinity Raise GBP1.9 Million to Expand its UK Wireless Broadband Network

Surrey-based wireless ISP Wifinity has managed to secure a debt finance facility of £1.9m from Santander Corporate & Commercial, which will be used to help expand the reach of their existing fixed wifi and public hotspot network around the United Kingdom. A private equity investment of £500,000 has also been secured.

UPD4 EZTV Cause Website Blocking Fail for UK Sky Broadband ISP Users

Some Sky Broadband users were this week left frustrated after the ISP began sporadically blocking TorrentFreak, a well-recognised news source for the BitTorrent and P2P community. But the cause appears to have been a deliberate manipulation by one of the websites that Sky is required to block, which has highlighted the danger of overblocking.

An interesting new study from social media analyst WaveMetrix has taken a look at the United Kingdom’s biggest broadband ISPs to discover which gives the best support via Twitter. The study found that good support is about more than being the fastest to reply. Just ask Virgin Media, which wasn’t the fastest like Sky Broadband but still did well.

Cambridgeshire UK Wins GBP1.173m from EU for Business Broadband Boost

The £45 million Connecting Cambridgeshire (England) scheme, which is currently rolling out BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC/P) services to 90% of local premises by the end of 2015, has won an extra £1.173m from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to help get businesses connected.
