Budget internet and phone provider TalkTalk has today quietly revealed a spate of new price hikes for its UK phone, broadband and TV services. The changes, which are largely in response to a similar move by BT and other ISPs, are all due to take effect from 1st January 2013.

The total number of EE’s (Orange UK) fixed line Home Broadband subscribers have increased to 723,000 in Q3-2012, which represents a pleasant quarterly growth of +9,000 from the meagre 714,000 recorded in its previous Q2 results when only +1,000 were added.

ISP BT Retail has quietly upgraded its top 100Mbps capable fibre optic superfast broadband BTInfinity package to offer UK internet download speeds of up to 160Mbps (Megabits per second) from £35 inc. VAT a month to home consumers (upload speeds have also boosted from 15Mbps to 20Mbps).

The UK government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has released its official response to July’s controversial Lords Inquiry into the UK government’s superfast broadband strategy, which called for a more competitive national fibre optic network to be built. But anybody expecting to see big changes will be disappointed.

Ofcom has today confirmed the successful completion of the UK’s switchover from the old Analogue TV to Digital Terrestrial Television (DTTV) signals, which paves the way for the next generation of 4G superfast Mobile Broadband (LTE) services to launch via the vacant 800MHz band.

BTOpenreach, which manages access to BT’s national UK telecoms network, has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that it has no general plans to disguise street cabinets. The confirmation follows an earlier suggestion by the government’s culture spokesman, Viscount Younger, that “plans [were] afoot to camouflage” the big green FTTC boxes.

The UK country manager for Brocade, a global network solutions provider, has suggested that BT and Virgin Media’s legal challenge against the use of public money (State Aid) to improve broadband services in the city of Birmingham might actually “improve the scheme’s chances of success“.

Cable operator Virgin Media UK has today released its latest quarterly results (Q3-2012), which saw their broadband ISP subscriber base increase by +44,200 in the quarter to reach a total of 4,413,400 (a good return to growth).

As expected the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), a trade body that represents the UK music industry, has this week called on six of the country’s biggest broadband ISPs to block three additional websites that it accuses of helping to facilitate copyright infringement (internet piracy).

BTOpenreach has announced yet another plan to recruit up to 250 new telecoms engineers from “Armed Forces leavers” (i.e. those due to leave within the next year). The ex-Military personnel will be used to help support the UK operators £2.5bn national roll out of superfast broadband (FTTC etc.) services.

The results from 749 respondents to ISPreview.co.uk’s latest reader poll found that just 15.3% would currently be willing to pay extra for a faster 4G based Mobile Broadband service, while the rest either said “no” (48%) or were simply undecided (36.5%). Mobile operator EE will launch the first national UK 4G service before the end of this month.

National UK telecoms operators BT and Virgin Media have “disappointed” Birmingham City Council (BCC) after they launched a shock legal challenge against the city’s £10m publicly funded (State Aid) plan to expand the reach of “ultrafast” (100Mbps+) broadband ISP and public wifi services by 2015.
