Alternative network provider Wildanet, which is building a gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across rural parts of Cornwall and Devon in England, has just become the latest UK ISP to start offering special discounts to holders of a Blue Light Card (i.e. price cuts for workers in the emergency services and veterans).

Network services provider BT Wholesale has confirmed to ISPreview that they’ve taken the decision to “retire” their long-running BroadBand Performance Test (speed tester), which is a change that was formally introduced at the start of this month. But BT has yet to post a notice about this on the service page, which may cause some confusion for those trying to run a test.

Some customers of UK ISP Sky Broadband, primarily those in West Yorkshire (England), appear to be suffering from an unusual problem with their internet connectivity. The issue is disrupting video playback on YouTube and hampering access and downloads from Google Play (Android App store), as well as some other services.

A new report from consultancy firm EY and European broadband operator Liberty Global, which alongside Telefonica is also a parent of the merged Virgin Media and O2 UK, has today argued for the “strategic adoption” of AI in the telco sector to help drive “major sustainability gains over the next decade“. Just don’t worry about its power consumption.

Edinburgh-based alternative UK network ISP GoFibre has today announced that they’ve managed to sign-up 1,000 customers to their new full fibre (FTTP) broadband network in the Scottish Borders town of Hawick, which has just completed its build. Locals are now being offered a special deal that gives new customers speeds of 1000Mbps for the price of 500Mbps for the duration of their contract.

The wholesale division of UK broadband ISP Virgin Media Business (VMO2) has today announced that they’ve started offering their high-bandwidth products, such as National Ethernet (NE) and Direct Internet Access (DIA), over their new “next generation” Converged Interconnect Network (CIN).

Network operator CityFibre has today announced that they’ve begun the roll-out phase of their £112 million state-aid supported Project Gigabit contract for Kent (Lot 29) in England. This will extend their 10Gbps capable FTTP broadband ISP network to an additional 50,000+ premises in hard-to-reach rural areas.

Shropshire-based UK ISP Aquiss has this morning announced that they’ve launched an additional range of broadband packages based off FullFibre Limited‘s (Fibre Heroes) network, which has so far deployed an open access Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 380,000 UK premises ‘ready for service’ (23rd Aug 2024).

New data from Ookla, which operates the popular Speedtest.net internet connection benchmarking service, has revealed that the United Kingdom still places near the bottom of the table in Europe for 5G mobile availability (mobile broadband) on a score of just 42.2% (i.e. the percentage of users with 5G devices spending most of their time connected to 5G networks).

Alternative network operator Netomnia (inc. Brsk and YouFibre) has today announced that they’ve successfully expanded their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 2.08 million UK homes and businesses (RFS) on time (up from 1.82m on 30th Sept 2024). Customers have also grown to 238,000 (up from 190k).

Telecoms provider Vodafone UK has confirmed that they’re “working hard to resolve” a problem that appears to be making it difficult for some of their new home broadband customers to claim the operators offer of up to £100 in “switching credit” for inward migrations. This is offered to those who incur Early Termination Charges (ETCs) when leaving their existing ISP.

In a small update, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has confirmed to ISPreview that their investigation into the September 2023 cyberattack and data breach of mobile network operator Lyca Mobile (here) is still “ongoing“. But the ICO declined to answer why it was taking so long to reach a conclusion.

London-registered network operator EXA Infrastructure, which was acquired by investment firm ‘I Squared Capital’ in 2021, has today announced that they’ve signed binding agreements to acquire specialist connectivity services provider Aqua Comms, which operates a number of transatlantic and intra-European subsea infrastructure systems (fibre optic cables).

Openreach (BT) has released the next January 2025 batch of 163 exchanges (Tranche 19) in their “FTTP Priority Exchange Stop Sell” programme, which reflects areas where over 75% of premises are able to get full fibre lines and will thus stop selling copper based analogue phone and broadband products (i.e. FTTP becomes the only product option).

Ofcom has today launched a new consultation that proposes to exempt lots of additional devices (equipment) from needing a wireless telegraphy licence, such as 5G handsets and dongles on an aircraft or ship and 5.8 GHz (5725-5850 MHz) Fixed Wireless Access kit – used by many wireless broadband ISPs to offer rural connectivity.

Mobile operator Three UK has this morning announced that they’ve selected Ericsson to build their new cloud-native core network, which it claims will be the “largest in Europe” and one that will end up “more than tripling its core capacity” to 9Tbps (Terabits per second).

Customers of Sky’s TV (Sky Broadband) service, specifically those with their Sky Cinema plan, have been told that their included Paramount+ subscription will be “moved” to the lower value Paramount+ Basic (with ads) plan from 21st January 2025. Some customers will no doubt see this as a downgrade, given that the overall plan price remains the same.
