Last night’s FIFA World Cup 2026 last-16 match between England and Mexico, which saw us walk away with the win after 3 goals (Mexico scored 2), caused an abnormal increase in broadband and mobile traffic across the small hours of the morning as many people stayed awake to watch the event.

Broadband and media giant Sky UK (Comcast) has this morning confirmed that they’ve “agreed terms” to acquire ITV’s broadcasting business, specifically the company’s Media and Entertainment divisions, which include both their free-to-air TV channels and the ITV X video streaming service for a total consideration of up to £1.6bn (£1.2bn of which is cash).

Council Tell Openreach to Remove External UK Broadband Boxes from Homes

The City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council (CBMDC) in West Yorkshire has told UK broadband and phone operator Openreach (BT) to remove their external wall boxes (CSP) from homes within the World Heritage Site area of the city, such as those around the Saltaire UNESCO area and possibly others. Such boxes are usually installed as part of copper and fibre deployments.

At the same time they’ve also named Three UK as the fastest mobile broadband (4G, 5G) operator. But there are caveats.

Low-cost mobile provider iD Mobile (Currys), which piggybacks off VodafoneThree’s (Three UK) national 4G and 5G network via a virtual operator (mvno) partnership, has reported seeing subscribers grow by +18% over the last year to total 2.6 million (up from 2.3m in January 2026) – putting them ahead of their 2.5m target for the year.

The Runnymede Borough Council (RBC) in Surrey (England) appears to be claiming that “BT have cut off the phone and internet connections“, which a council account on Facebook said had left “as many as 2000 vulnerable residents without their Community Alarm service which summons help in an emergency“. But the reality may be more complex.

Virgin Media O2 and BT Saw Huge UK Mobile Traffic Surge as England Beat DR Congo UPDATE

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has revealed that yesterday’s FIFA World Cup 2026 match between England and DR Congo (2 – 1) fuelled the “biggest mobile traffic event ever recorded” on their mobile network, which saw mobile data (broadband) traffic peak 20.38% higher than the prior peak (during the Arsenal vs PSG UEFA Champions League Final) and 27.67% above a comparable pre-tournament week.
