A new study from the Prysmian Group, which was commissioned by cable manufacturer Europacable, has found that Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP networks are the most energy efficient of consumer fixed line technologies, compared with FTTC (VDSL2) and Hybrid Fibre Coax (DOCSIS 3 networks, like Virgin Media).

UK ISP Pulse8 Broadband has reduced some of their monthly prices and, unlike other providers at this time of year, these reflect changes to their standard pricing (i.e. not temporary discounts). The main change is on their FTTC based plans, although they also offer FTTP and G.fast via Openreach’s network.

Broadband ISP BT has today announced their new “Smarter Living Challenge” project with Hubbub, which over the next 3 months will trial the use of various smart devices in order to help show whether they can help 60 diverse UK households to both cut their bills and carbon emissions.

The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, has today published his 2020 Spending Review and in so doing has kicked off the new £5bn UK Gigabit Broadband Programme, which previously aimed to ensure that “every home” could access a 1Gbps capable connection by the end of 2025 but now expects a “minimum” of 85% coverage by that date.

A new study by Global Wireless Solutions (GWS), which was conducted by Censuswide with 2,007 UK adults during September to early November 2020, has determined that only 64% of properties have a “decent broadband” (10Mbps+) service and a third (30%) are suffering from “inadequate throughputs” (i.e. sub-2Mbps speeds).

At some point in the near future Amazon plans to introduce a new feature to their smart devices (Echo, Echo Show, Ring etc.) called ‘Sidewalk‘, which by default will create a new wireless network – this has access to both your broadband ISP connection and that of your neighbour’s (if they have similar kit) – to improve connectivity.

A number of UK Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO) on BT’s (EE) national UK mobile network, such as the mobile solutions offered by broadband providers like Plusnet and The Phone Co-op, may soon gain access to modern features (ultrafast 5G etc.) as a result of an expanded deal with Transatel (NTT Group).

Budget broadband provider TalkTalk will today become the latest in a long line of ISPs to temporarily reduce their monthly prices for new customers as part of the annual “Black Friday” phenomenon. On top of that they’ve also removed the postage fee for almost all of their packages, except their older ADSL based plan.

Rural focused full fibre broadband ISP Gigaclear has today launched their own Black Friday orientated deal, which offers a special unlimited 200Mbps (symmetric) package for just £20 per month for the first 18 months of service (£47 per month thereafter).

Rural broadband builder Broadway Partners (aka – UK ISP Broadway Broadband) appears to have extended their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) rollout in Wales to include rural communities in parts of Powys, starting with the small villages of Llanafan Fawr (population of 470+) and Llanwrthwl (population of 190+).

Hampshire-based UK ISP Giganet, which offers Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband packages via both the Openreach and Cityfibre networks, has cut the one-off activation fee on their top 500Mbps and 900Mbps plans from £45 to just £1 as part of a new Black Friday discount.

London-centric broadband ISP CommunityFibre, which last week launched a special 800Mbps for £30 plan, have this week added another set of discounts that reduce the monthly prices by between £2.50 and £10 across their existing range of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based packages in the city.

Fibre optic ISP Truespeed, which is deploying a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across rural parts of South West England, has today introduced a series of new packages that, among other things, push the provider’s top median average speeds to 900Mbps (gigabit class).

The Government will today publish their Telecommunications (Security) Bill, which imposes new rules to improve the security of UK networks (mobile and broadband) and ban “high risk vendors” like Huawei, while also threatening fines of up to £100k a day (or 10% of turnover) against operators that fail to meet the standard.
