The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has today called for members of the public and industry alike to submit nominations for its 2020 “Internet Hero” award, with the eventual winner being announced via a special online ceremony on the 18th November 2020 at the 22nd annual ISPA Awards event.

Network builder Cityfibre UK have just kicked off the construction phase of their £40m project to deploy a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTH) broadband network across the Wiltshire town of Swindon, which is being supported by civil engineering firm VolkerSmart Technologies.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has warned the market regulator, Ofcom, against allowing BT (Openreach) to sign “deeply discounted and long-term” wholesale agreements for “full fibre” (FTTP) services with rivals ISPs, which they claim might make it harder for alternative networks to compete against the established giant.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone has just introduced a number of discounts to their FTTC (Superfast) and FTTP (Gigafast – Openreach and Cityfibre) based broadband packages, which reduces the monthly price on their superfast plans and offers several months of free service on their gigafast options.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica) has revealed a list of the top 10 most data hungry (mobile broadband) UK cities for September 2020, which sees Bradford top the list after it saw data consumption on their network jump by 50% when compared with the same time last year. Meanwhile Coventry came a close second (47%).

Over the past week we’ve noted that Sky Broadband appears to have started making their new Openreach Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “Superfast” (59Mbps) and “Ultrafast” (145Mbps) broadband package available to existing customers, after initially only appearing to launch it for new subscribers.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today requested approval from Ofcom for them to trade some of their 4G (mobile broadband) friendly unpaired radio spectrum in the 2.6GHz band (between 2595-2620MHz) to rival O2 (Telefonica UK). At present neither O2 nor Three UK own any of their own spectrum in the 2.6GHz band.

A new report from the National Audit Office, which examines the original £1.9bn Superfast Broadband Programme (SFBB), has warned that the Government may struggle to achieve its ambition of bringing gigabit-capable broadband to all by the end of 2025 and thus risks “leaving the hardest to reach areas even further behind.”

London-focused broadband ISP CommunityFibre will today launch a new promotion that doubles the service speeds for new customers of their 150Mbps and 400Mbps plans, which means that for the first 24 months of service subscribers to those tiers will instead receive 300Mbps and 800Mbps respectively at no extra cost.

UK ISP KCOM, which is investing a further £100m to extend the availability of their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, have today confirmed the next phase of their expansion. This will see them cross the Humber Bridge to cover 10,000 properties in North Lincolnshire for the first time.
