BT Sign OneWeb Deal to Tackle UK Rural Broadband Slow Spots

UK ISP BT and satellite operator OneWeb, which is partly owned by the UK government, have reached an agreement that will see the two working together to bring ultrafast low-latency broadband speeds to some of the hardest to reach rural parts of the country, where even their £5bn Project Gigabit programme would struggle to go.

Cisco Survey Says UK Recovery Must be Built on Better and Free Broadband

Technology firm Cisco has today published their UK Broadband Index, which surveyed 2,000 employees across the country to get their take on the current standard of home internet connectivity. Overall, 70% want to see the economic recovery post-COVID19 being built on better internet access, and 55% believe “broadband should be free.“

Giffgaff UK Boost Mobile Data Allowances for Existing Plans

Mobile operator giffgaff has announced that they’re boosting the data (mobile broadband) allowances on some of their existing 4G and ultrafast 5G plans, which will apply to both new and existing customers. For example, their £12 per month “goodybag” will grow from 10GB to 12GB at no extra cost.

Full fibre broadband ISP Hyperoptic UK has secured new partnership agreements with Birmingham Council and the City of Wolverhampton Council in the West Midlands of England. 5G Mobile Users Gobble up to 2.7 Times More Data Than 4G

Opensignal, which uses crowd-sourced data to benchmark mobile networks, has found that 5G connected users in 20 of the leading markets for the new mobile broadband tech see much greater mobile data usage than 4G users. The biggest increase was in Japan (2.7x), while the UK scores 2.0x and Ireland came last on 1.2x.

Mobile Operator EE UK to Reintroduce EU Roaming Charges UPDATE

EE (BT) has followed this morning’s confusion over O2’s tougher excess data charges for EU roaming (here) by revealing that they will be reintroducing EU roaming charges for new or upgrading customers from 7th July 2021. In short, you’ll be charged £2 a day to use your allowances across 47 European countries from January 2022.

Study Examines Capabilities of LEO Satellite Broadband Networks

Researchers at MIT’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics have tried to compare the estimated global data capacity of the four largest Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast broadband satellite constellations – SpaceX (Starlink), Telesat, OneWeb, and Amazon (Kuiper). Interestingly, they end up closer than you might think.

Vodafone UK Pilot 5G Standalone in London, Manchester and Cardiff

Mobile operator Vodafone has today confirmed that their first pilots of ultrafast 5G Standalone (SA) network technology, which is being supported by kit from Ericsson (here), have finally gone live in parts of London, Manchester and Cardiff. The move follows last year’s trial at Coventry University in summer 2020.

Clarifying O2 UK’s Tougher Excess Data Charges for EU Roaming

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) appears set to introduce a tougher Fair Usage Policy (FUP) for data (mobile broadband) usage when roaming around the EU. From 2nd August 2021, Pay Monthly customers will now be charged £3.50 for every GigaByte of data used over a cap of 25GB. But this is not a new approach.

Sky’s Sibling NOW TV Streaming Service Drops Discovery Channel

Openreach (BT) will today add 551 new UK cities and towns to the rollout plan for their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network. The latest batch of locations accounts for a total of 5 million extra premises, all of which will be upgraded as part of their £15bn project to cover 25 million premises by December 2026.
