Mobile operator O2 has kicked the 5G mobile hype train into high gear again, this time by predicting that the new mobile broadband tech could work alongside connected technologies, such as smart grids and autonomous vehicles, to save up to 269 megatonnes of CO2 by 2035 (England’s total emissions in 2018 were 280 Mts).

Last autumn Openreach (BT) revealed that the West Devon (England) town of Okehampton would be among 13 other rural locations to help pilot a “range of new tools and techniques” for deploying their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network (here). Fast forward to today and the work is almost completed.

Carmarthenshire-based ISP Dyfed Superfast (Dyfed IT), which supplies wireless broadband services to premises across rural parts of Wales, has acquired rival network Pembs WiFi for an undisclosed sum and aims to extend gigabit broadband coverage. The latter had been building a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

Budget UK internet service provider TalkTalk has launched a new promotion that bundles one year’s worth of included access to Amazon’s Prime video streaming and delivery service (normally worth £79 per year) into their unlimited “fibre broadband” (FTTC, G.fast), phone and TV bundles.

Alternative “full fibre” ISP YouFibre, which a few months ago started their first gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network roll-out in the small Durham (England) town of Peterlee (here), has just recently followed that by welcoming the first of several live customers.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today confirmed that they’ve just completed the build of their 500th new mobile site, located in Glencoe (Scotland), as part of their contract to roll-out a new 4G based Emergency Services Network (ESN). This is on top of the 19,000 existing sites that have already been upgraded for the ESN.

Broadband ISP and TV provider Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has completed another network extension, which this time sees an additional 2,500 homes in Leasowe – an area on the north coast of the Wirral Peninsula (Merseyside) – gain access to their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service.

UK ISP Hyperoptic, which has deployed their 1Gbps capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband network across large apartment and office buildings in various cities, has launched a new migration service that makes it cheaper and easier for them to switch people who are still stuck in an existing contract with another ISP.

In an odd development Eurostar has blamed the Coronavirus for their decision to disable wireless broadband connectivity (WiFi) in their Standard class train coaches. Meanwhile those travelling in Standard Premier and Business Premier are apparently immune and can still surf the internet (bandwidth allowing).

New UK ISP Beacons Telecom (related Facebook page) has today revealed some of the first details about their plans to deploy a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit-capable broadband network across rural parts of Wales, which is already starting to connect some of its first customers.

The UK Government has today announced that nearly half a million premises have been connected to gigabit-capable broadband since summer 2018, which stems from £1bn of public investment. But in order to push take-up they’re now launching a new Gigabit Take-Up Advisory Group (GigaTAG).

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has today published their latest annual 2020 Internet Access report, which reveals that 5% (2.7 million) of UK adults have not used the internet in the past 3 months and that’s down from 7% (3.9 million) last year. Sadly issues of age and disability remain key barriers to adoption.

The latest annual Digging Up Britain 2020 report by LSBUD, which provides a free online asset search facility to UK civil engineering firms, has claimed that telecoms companies (broadband and mobile network operators etc.) are “top of the list when it comes to safe digging” (i.e. accounting for 32% of total searches).

Broadband ISP Hyperoptic, which is busy deploying their “hyperfast” (1Gbps) full fibre (FTTP/B) network out across large apartment buildings in various UK cities, has hailed itself as outperforming industry rivals after they secured a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of +51 (only around 10% of UK brands get an NPS of 40 or more).

Broadband ISP Virgin Media has revealed that Wednesday’s release of the new Call of Duty: Warzone Season 5 patch saw internet traffic over their network spike to 60% higher than the same time last week. During peak time (8pm to 10pm) there was also a 20% uplift in traffic. Openreach (BT) and TalkTalk were also hit.

Vodafone has just become the first UK mobile operator to switch-on a live 4G Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN) site, which could help to cut the cost of building new networks by standardising the design and functionality of hardware and software. Separately they’ve also tested Universal Customer Premises Equipment (uCPE).
