An investment of £1.5 million by the Welsh Government means that passengers across Wales can now benefit from free WiFi on all Arriva Trains Wales (ATW) services, which has been retrofitted to ATW’s entire fleet including Pacer trains, Class 153’s and the carriages used on the north-south Express.

Cable ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has published their latest Q4 2017 (calendar) results, which saw them pledge to introduce a new 350Mbps broadband tier and add 159,000 premises to their UK network coverage. Virgin’s total broadband base also grew by +24K in the quarter to total 5,104,300.

Sky has quietly updated their UK website to note that “some” of their Sky Broadband prices will “increase” on 1st April 2018, which we predict could result in an average rise of around +£1-2 per month on the standard rental charge. Unfortunately Sky aren’t expected to reveal the exact details until next week.

Rocket company SpaceX will on Saturday launch a pair of small Low Earth Orbit (LEO) test satellites for their proposed Starlink service, which could in theory deliver ultrafast broadband speeds of up to 1Gbps and low latency times of just 25-35ms (milliseconds) across the world.

Last night the Court of Appeal in London rejected Three UK’s final attempt to have Ofcom impose a 30% spectrum cap on their forthcoming auction of 4G and 5G friendly radio spectrum in the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands, which would have stopped EE (BT) from bidding and hampered Vodafone.

A new online survey of 5,603 UK adults has found that the average (mean) amount of Mobile Broadband data included with a Mobile plan is 5.9GB (GigaBytes) and yet subscribers only consume an average of 2.5GB, which suggests that some could save money by choosing a cheaper tariff.

Internet provider uno (uno Comms Ltd) has today become the next UK ISP after BT to pilot a new range of “ultrafast broadband” packages based off the fledgling hybrid fibre G.fast network, which can offer download speeds of up to 160Mbps (30Mbps up) and 330Mbps (50Mbps up).

City focused fibre optic UK ISP Hyperoptic, which claims to be the United Kingdom’s largest residential provider of Gigabit broadband connections (FTTP/B), have carried out a trial of the “fastest home broadband the country has ever seen” by testing a 10Gbps service at East Village (the London 2012 Athletes’ Village).

The first customer has officially gone live on Airband’s new fixed wireless “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) service in Shropshire, which forms part of last year’s new £11.2m Connecting Shropshire contract that will see the network being rolled out reach an additional 14,000+ premises by 2020.

Mobile operator EE has decided to complement their existing 4G based wireless 4GEE Home Broadband service by introducing its own brand of external antenna, which can be fixed to the outside of your house in order to improve signal reception and thus Mobile Broadband performance.
