The Superfast Essex project in England has announced the award of their £24m Phase 3 “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) roll-out contract to Gigaclear and BT, which should extend the network to a further 24,000 premises and push local coverage to around 97% by December 2019.

Internet traffic prioritisation has been completely removed from Plusnet’s residential broadband service(s), which is because the ISP claims to have been “investing heavily in its network” and as a result their platform now has enough “capacity and resilience” that prioritisation is no longer needed.

A new report from the London Assembly’s regeneration committee has described the quality of mobile (4G) and fixed line broadband connectivity in the city as “frankly embarrassing.” The report also calls for more ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) to be deployed in order to “bypass the copper problem.”

Customers of TalkTalk’s existing broadband and phone (line rental) packages have this week been informed that their prices are set to be hiked by between 4-6% from 1st August 2017 and some increases will be introduced from tomorrow. The cost of calls is also set to rise.

East Yorkshire ISP KCOM has today announced the next phase of their £60m Lightstream roll-out (July – September 2017), which will see their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) dominated ultrafast broadband network reach a further 10,000 homes and businesses in East Hull.

Earlier this year Virgin Media made the bold decision to adopt “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) as the entry-level speed for their service (here), although ISPreview.co.uk has learnt that the cable operator is about to test the reintroduction of their old 50Mbps tier as a new budget package.

The Satellite and Terrestrial Network for 5G (SaT5G) project, which is supported by 16 major operators like BT, Avanti, SES etc. and £7.3 million (€8.3m) via the EU’s Horizon 2020 5G Research & Innovation contract, has begun work to integrate Satellite and future 5G Mobile networks.

Openreach (BT) has uploaded a new technical information document for their imminent Dark Fibre Access (DFA) trial, which is due to start in August. The document describes how the product works and sets out what solutions will be made available to ISPs.

Homes and businesses near Waitrose in the market town of Otley (Leeds) could suffer over a month of unstable broadband connectivity after a lorry crashed into one of Openreach’s (BT) street cabinets. The cabinet was promptly replaced but problems with the power supply remain.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset project in England has extended the deadline for approval of vouchers under their rural subsidy scheme, which offers up to £500 per property to help those stuck in sub-2Mbps broadband areas to get a 10Mbps or faster connection.

Telecoms operator BT has today switched on the first of their new InLinkUK (formerly LinkUK) smart kiosks in London, which will be able to offer free Gigabit public WiFi, free UK phone calls, USB device charging and a range of other digital services to help people passing within the vicinity.

Consumer magazine Which? has today published the results of a new survey that reveals the fastest and slowest local authorities across the United Kingdom by broadband download speed (median). The Orkney Islands (6.3Mbps) are by far the slowest and Tamworth is the fastest (30.4Mbps).

A new survey of 2,006 UK employees, which was conducted by Virgin Media, has found that 71% of home-workers view “fast, reliable broadband” as “very important” and the cable operator warns that the ASA’s on-going review of how line speeds are advertised fails to consider this group.
