Gigabit Broadband May Boost British Economy £51.4bn by 2025 UPDATE

A new study from Assembly Research, which was commissioned via the vested interests of Huawei, has forecast that the UK Government’s deployment of “gigabit-capable broadband” could provide £51.4bn gross value added to the economy in five years, growing to £68.8bn in 2030. But any delays could be very costly.

Cityfibre Start 1Gb Home Broadband Build in Bury St Edmunds

Cityfibre has today announced that they’ve already started construction of their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network in the Suffolk (England) town of Bury St Edmunds (not to be confused with Bury near Manchester), which was only very recently added (here) to their £4bn UK roll-out plan.

Full fibre UK ISP Jurassic Fibre, which aspires to cover 350,000 premises with a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in South West England (here), seems to be making good progress and their first Optical Line Terminal (OLT) in Exmouth has just gone live (expected to serve 14,000 premises in the town).

Full fibre ISP Gigaclear has announced that their on-going roll-out of a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Essex (England) has now covered 10,000 premises, which includes 1,153 homes and businesses that were added in just the last month alone. A further 20,000 are due to be covered by December 2021.

Disney+ Goes Live on NOW TV’s UK Video Streaming Service

Sky’s sibling UK ISP and TV streaming service, NOW TV (NOW Broadband), has today finally added the Disney+ app to its platform. Naturally customers will still need to purchase Disney+ directly through Disney and then sign-in on their account through the new app in order to access its content.

The FTTH Council Europe has today published their annual 2020 ranking, which lists the countries with the strongest subscriber penetration of “full fibre” (FTTP/H/B) ultrafast broadband ISP networks. The good news is that the United Kingdom continues to claw its way up and is no longer at the very bottom.

BT Part Fixes InLink Kiosk Problem – Rebrands to Street Hubs

BT has partly resolved an issue that left many of their InLink UK smart WiFi broadband kiosks without a working tablet or free phone calling functionality (feedback from ISPreview.co.uk readers suggests this has been going on for over a week). The units have also been rebranded to “Street Hubs.“

CMA Shuns Competition Fears to Clear £2bn Cellnex Buy of Arqiva

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has today cleared Arqiva to proceed with the proposed £2bn sale of their UK masts and rooftop sites to Cellnex (here) which, despite protests from mobile network operator Three UK, ultimately found that the deal “does not raise competition concerns.”

Smishing – UK Mobile Firms Unite to Stop COVID-19 Text SCAMS

A rise in COVID-19 (Coronavirus) related text message scams (e.g. Smishing), which often attempt to trick UK mobile users into parting with their money or other sensitive personal details, has prompted mobile operators to join with other industries in order to update a trial of the new SMS SenderID Protection Registry.

New Broadband Index Ranks 334 UK Areas by Average DL Speed

Comparison site Comparethemarket.com has posted an updated analysis of Ofcom’s Connected Nations 2019 data (here), which uses information supplied by UK ISPs to rank 334 local authorities by their average broadband download speed. Naturally Hull (East Yorkshire) tops the list with 131.4Mbps and the biggest annual rise of 54.9Mbps.

ISP Plusnet to Replace Pre-Paid Line Rental Saver Discount UPDATE
