Nextgenaccess Complete Full Fibre Between Bristol and Wales

Fibre optic UK network builder Nextgenaccess, which is supported by an investment of £22m from the UK National Digital Infrastructure Fund (NDIF) to help spread its 10Gbps broadband to businesses, has today confirmed the completion of their new 67km high capacity carrier-neutral fibre network between Bristol and Wales.

The Leader of Oldham Council, Sean Fielding, yesterday told watchers of the Mayor of Greater Manchester’s (Andy Burnham) weekly press conference on the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic that the UK Government’s aim of making “gigabit broadband” available to every home by 2025 “should be brought forward to 2023.” Ok.. how?

COVID-19 – OECD Compare Exchange Traffic Between Countries

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has done a short study of internet use during the COVID-19 crisis, which highlights the impact on internet exchange points in several countries (inc. UK). Overall traffic jumped by as much as 60% but broadband ISPs successfully maintained their services.

Cityfibre Starts £25m FTTH Broadband Build in Doncaster UK

Full fibre builder Cityfibre has today announced that they’ve finally started their £25m project to build a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network in the South Yorkshire town of Doncaster, which will aim to reach “almost every home and business” (usually 85%+). ISP Shell Energy Discounts UK Broadband Prices Until June

Energy provider and ISP Shell Energy has today discounted their home broadband and phone packages for new subscribers, which for example drops their 63Mbps “Superfast Fibre Plus” package from £34.99 per month on an 18 month term to just £29.99. Customers will be able to take this deal until 1st June 2020.

Openreach (BT) has kindly furnished ISPreview.co.uk with some up-to-date data that shows the change in their weekly network traffic (Ethernet, broadband etc.) by each region of the United Kingdom due to the impact of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) crisis. London saw the biggest jump (28.58%) to 112.37 PetaBytes.

Ookla Updates on COVID-19 Impact on UK Broadband ISP Speeds

Internet speed testing firm Ookla (Speedtest.net) has issued an update on the impact of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) crisis on fixed broadband and mobile broadband speeds across the United Kingdom. The update notes that, between 2nd March and 20th April 2020, fixed lines saw a tiny -3% decrease while mobile recorded a +3% increase.

£24m Cityfibre 1Gb FTTH Broadband Build Progress in Ipswich

Full fibre developer Cityfibre appears to have recently started the build phase of their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based broadband ISP network in the Suffolk (England) town of Ipswich, which is expected to cost the operator around £24 million to complete by the autumn of 2022.

Customers of TV and broadband ISP Virgin Media UK have this evening been affected by a seemingly intermittent problem with their national internet connectivity, which the operator initially claimed to have resolved only for the issue to return again and again. Other ISPs, Virgin Mobile and Ethernet services have also been impacted.
