Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has done something rather crafty by creating a “human-like” AI (Artificial Intelligence) ‘Granny’ called Daisy, which is designed to answer calls in real-time from fraudsters and then keep them on the phone and away from customers for as long as possible – wasting them time and money.

Hampshire-based business broadband and cloud provider Onecom, which is backed by LDC and the Ares Management Corporation (here), has caused some concern among their partners after notifying them of an ongoing dispute with their supplier of eve Services (KM Telecom) that threatens to disrupt some services.

The UK government (DSIT) has this morning announced that seven more 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have gone live across North, South West and West Wales as part of the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project. The work will benefit parts of Bontddu, Llanelltyd, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, Penmaenpool, Tabor, Snowdonia National Park and Bontgoch.

Broadband network operator nexfibre, which shares some of their parentage with retail ISP partner Virgin Media (O2), has announced that they’ve extended their 2Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network to cover 9,000 additional homes in the Essex (England) town of Witham.

A new UK mobile operator called Ymobile (Ycorp) has officially launched today and claims to be the United Kingdom’s “first data-led, eSIM MVNO“, all while claiming to offer users a “simpler, more streamlined and environmentally friendly” alternative to traditional mobile networks.

Rural network builder and ISP Fusion Fibre Group (formerly FACTCO), which has built a number of its own FTTP broadband networks for various communities, has today moved to expand their availability across the UK by signing a new wholesale agreement with PlatformX Communications. PXC was formerly known as TalkTalk Wholesale before the demerger (here).

Debt-troubled UK broadband ISP TalkTalk recently published their group accounts for the year to 29th February 2024, which reveals that their on-net customer base (fibre FTTP/C and broadband) fell again to 3.6 million (down from 3.94m in 2023). But their Ethernet (leased lines etc.) base grew to 75,000 (up from 69,400).

EY has today published their annual digital home survey of 2,500 UK consumers, which among other things reveals that the cost-of-living crisis has prompted 34% to consider “more economical broadband options” and 5G mobile is increasingly becoming a substitute for traditional home broadband (33% of households are prepared to switch to this, up from 29% in 2023).

Mobile operator Lyca Mobile, which is a virtual network operator (MVNO) on EE’s platform in the UK, has partnered up with global eSIM provider Sim Local to offer “high data plans” (mobile broadband) as a regional eSIM option in the UK, France, Ireland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Portugal and the US (Lyca also offers eSIMs across its network of 23 countries).

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today marked an important milestone by switching on the UK’s first publicly funded “Total Not Spot” (TNS) 4G (mobile broadband) mast site on South Uist in Scotland, which forms part of the £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network (SRN) programme and its efforts to extend mobile coverage into remote rural areas.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has today published their Q2 FY25 financial results, which reveals that their fixed line broadband base grew again to total 1.477 million customers (up by 50k in Q2 vs 44k in Q1) and their mobile base fell again to total 18.474 million (down by -93k in Q2 vs -71k in Q1).

Internet provider Origin Broadband, which is a trading name for Origin Communications and OB Telecom (TalkTalk), appears to have re-opened their order system to new broadband customers after closing it some months ago. The ISP is currently only available to those covered by Openreach’s national network.

Fixed wireless operator and broadband ISP Connexin has today called on the UK government to expand its focus beyond full fibre and 5G mobile by recognising Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN / LoRaWAN), which are often used to help connect small IoT style sensors and meters, as “critical infrastructure“.

Broadband and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today become the latest ISP to adopt Ofcom’s new guidance on inflation-linked annual broadband price rises. In practice, this means that new and re-contracting (upgrading) customers will be hit by a flat price increase of up to £3.50 (monthly) each April.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published the final draft auction regulations for its plan to auction off a large chunk of millimetre wave (mmW) radio spectrum frequency in the 26GHz and 40GHz bands, which will be used by mobile operators to deliver faster 5G (mobile broadband) services – mostly in urban areas.
