Customers of Virgin Media’s (VMO2) email service are once again reporting problems today. The situation occurred after the provider attempted to conduct maintenance on the service which, instead of making things better, only appears to have resulted in a new set of “intermittent issues” (connectivity problems).

The Scottish Government has, in response to a Freedom of Information Request, published a useful progress update on their £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project with Openreach (BT), which reveals that 24,194 premises have now been covered by their rollout of a new “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) capable ISP network.

Network operator and broadband ISP Grain (Grain Connect) has today finally announced that they’ve launched their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network – using Point-to-Point (PTP) architecture – in the East Yorkshire (England) city of Hull. But at present it’s only available to around 20,000 premises.

Broadband ISP Zzoomm, which aims to cover 1 million premises in 85 UK towns with their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network by the end of 2025, have today announced that their rollout has now covered 150,000 premises (Ready for Service) across 29 locations – an extra 50,000 since February 2023.

Entertainment and technology firm Netgem, which provides set-top-box and video streaming solutions to broadband ISPs in the UK (and other countries) to help them launch Pay TV products for consumers, has signed a new deal with Gamestream that looks set to bring Cloud Gaming services to the platform.

A new Lords Committee report has today become the latest to try and tackle the age-old problem of Digital Exclusion (i.e. getting everybody online and ensuring they have the right skills). The Committee finds that the scale of the problem is a “direct consequence of political lethargy” and highlights the UK Government’s “lack of a credible plan.”

British registered OneWeb, which is part-owned by the UK government, has announced that they’ve expanded the commercial availability of their new constellation of low-latency and ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The service is now available throughout Europe and to the majority of the United States.

The Cambridgeshire Constabulary has appealed for information after they revealed that Openreach’s UK broadband and phone network in the county had been attacked eight times since May 2023 by criminal gangs, which typically target the theft of underground copper cables and often cause significant service outages.

The UK internet connection testing firm SamKnows, which supplies services that are used by both major broadband ISPs and Ofcom to help measure network performance, has announced that they’re to be acquired by global networking giant Cisco and will be joining their ThousandEyes team to integrate their technology.

Broadband ISPs that were planning to launch faster packages based off Openreach’s future Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) tiers, which push top download speeds to 1.2Gbps and 1.8Gbps (both offer 120Mbps upstream), may have to wait a little bit longer as the operator has extended their pilot test for another 3 months.
