Some customers of SpaceX’s popular Starlink broadband ISP in the UK have started reporting that their download speeds are being throttled, often to around 50Mbps, when they hit a certain threshold. So it’s perhaps no coincidence that they’ve also launched a ‘PRIORITY – 1TB‘ plan for £180.

The UK Government will today launch a new £7 million fund as one part of their wider Unleashing Rural Opportunity strategy, which will be used to “test out new ways” of bringing together satellite, wireless (FWA and mobile) and fixed line broadband ISP solutions to help “support farmers and tourism businesses” in rural areas.

Infracapital-backed network builder and ISP Ogi, which is investing £200m on the deployment of a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across 150,000 premises in Wales by 2025 (47,500 premises covered by March 2023), has revealed that they’ve awarded £36,750 to community groups within their patch.

Network operator Digital Infrastructure – supported by ISP BeFibre – has today announced that their gigabit-capable broadband infrastructure is now “well on its way to rolling out to a fully designed base of 400,000 premises, with over 100,000 now ready for connection.” On top of that, they’ve appointed a new CEO, Paul Doyle.

Openreach (BT) and Crimestoppers have begun offering a reward of £20,000 to help catch the criminals who were responsible for several thefts of their copper broadband and phone cables around the Thamesmead area of South-East London, which caused significant service disruption for locals.

Openreach has announced that they will finally introduce their new ‘Advanced Managed Install’ option for standalone UK broadband products (i.e. SOGEA – FTTC and SOGfast – G.fast) on 1st July 2023, which will give UK ISPs another option that can be offered to those with more complex installation requirements.

A new alternative network builder called NIO Net LTD (NIO Group) has revealed that they intend to build and operate both a Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network, which they’ll then wholesale out so that retail broadband ISPs can sell related packages on to homes and businesses.

New data from mobile benchmarking firm Opensignal has revealed that 53.3% of UK Smartphone users achieve average mobile broadband download speeds below 30Mbps (sub-“superfast” level), while 14% suffer sub-10Mbps downloads and 4.7% of users spend over 5% of their time with no mobile signal at all.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to stop publishing its annual summary of fixed line home broadband ISP speeds after the next report is released later this year (due Q4 2023). Mainly because they deem that it’s no longer needed as the market has changed.
