The UK Government has today launched two interesting new consultations, including one that is seeking views on a looming review of the legally-binding 10Mbps+ Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband and another that will help better understand how to improve broadband for “Very Hard to Reach” areas.

The consolidation train has started to pick up speed today after two UK builders of FTTP based broadband ISP networks – FullFibre Limited (Fibre Heroes) and Digital Infrastructure (BeFibre) – announced their intention to create a single wholesale company and a single wholesale platform, which will be a bigger, more ambitious single entity.

Network access provider CityFibre has updated on the progress of its work to roll-out a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across the city of Glasgow in Scotland, which started in 2021 and is costing c. £270m. The project is currently still due to be “substantially completed” by the end of 2025.

Customers of broadband ISP Virgin Media’s (VMO2) Pay TV services may like to know that, from today until 6am on 31st October 2023, they will all be given access to additional premium kids TV channels “at no extra cost“, including Sky Kids, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Cartoonito, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr and Nicktoons.

Some customers of Lyca Mobile, which is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) on EE’s (BT) national platform (previously O2), have – since Friday – been reporting that they’ve been unable to make any mobile calls or send text (SMS) messages. Most customers also report that they’ve been unable to get through to Lyca’s support.

Residents in the tiny rural Dorset community of North Bowood, near Bridport, have complained after a failure of Openreach’s local network left them without access to fast broadband connectivity for a whopping 10 long weeks, which the network access provider has struggled to repair due to unspecified safety considerations.

Altrincham-based F&W Networks, which has so far managed to extend their gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 360,000 UK premises (up from 250k in Feb 2023), appears to have become the latest alternative network to scale-back some of their build plans and notify staff of future redundancies.

A new report from the Social Market Foundation (SMF), which is a British cross-party think-tank, has recommended that companies providing essentials (broadband, energy, water and transport) are made to offer Social Tariffs to vulnerable customers “in a consistent manner” in order to ensure all eligible users can benefit.

Opensignal has published their latest biannual Mobile Network Experience Report for H2 2023, which benchmarks the 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) services from all four primary UK mobile operators – EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK – to find which ones deliver the best performance. Overall, EE and Three UK seem to fair the best.
