The Government (DSIT) has just confirmed that the Chair of their broadband and mobile centric Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency, Simon Blagden, resigned from his position yesterday “with immediate effect“. The details of Simon’s departure have not been made public, but it’s perhaps not surprising given the recent change of Government.

Openreach (BT) has today released the next batch of 92 exchanges (Tranche 17) in their “FTTP Priority Exchange Stop Sell” programme, which reflects areas where over 75% of premises are able to get full fibre and will thus stop selling copper based analogue phone and broadband products (i.e. FTTP becomes the only product option).

UK ISP Quickline has announced that their state aid (Project Gigabit) supported roll-out of a new gigabit full fibre (FTTP) broadband network in the North Yorkshire village of Escrick has now reached 600 homes. As part of that, they’ve teamed up with PBS Construction to show pupils at the local Primary School how they build the network via a “Digger Day“.

The Ordnance Survey (OS), which creates and maintains detailed location (map) information for Great Britain, claims to have launched a “game-changing advantage” for alternative broadband networks (Altnet) that can help them to roll-out full fibre lines by “eradicating time-draining obstacles“, such as missing data for multi-dwelling units (big residential buildings).

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today finalised their earlier proposal to BAN phone, mobile, pay TV and broadband ISPs from doing mid-contract price hikes that are linked to inflation and percentage changes. The plan is to introduce this change from 17th January 2025, before the next round of annual price increases typically hit.

Network benchmarking firm Opensignal has today published the results of a new study that explored the differences in broadband reliability between urban and rural areas across 18 countries. The study reveals that, among other things, the Nordics, the United Kingdom and Canada all score highly for connection reliability.

London-focused UK business internet provider Vorboss, which has rolled out a 100Gbps capable full fibre network across the city centre, has today announced that they’ve appointed two new chiefs to their top leadership team – Jason O’Malley as Chief of Commercial Operations (CCO) and Malcolm Puddefoot joins as Chief Revenue Officer (CRO).

London focused broadband ISP G.Network, which has spent the past few years building a gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of the city centre (here), has completed the “first phase” of a new deployment with the Peabody Trust – extending their fibre optic service to more homes across Camden and Westminster.

Internet provider Virgin Media (O2) has finally fixed a fault that left a small number of their broadband customers, specifically some of those on top tier packages (e.g. 1Gbps), with half their normal upload rate (i.e. 50Mbps instead of 100Mbps). But it’s unclear why the seemingly simple problem took over a month to resolve.

Homes in the Suffolk (England) village of Felsham have been left without access to broadband and phone services for over a week because, allegedly, Openreach (BT) are unable to fix the problem – a damaged telecoms pole that was struck during a car accident on Cockfield Road – until they’ve received “an estimate” from the driver’s insurance company.

A collaboration between IT consultancy firm CGI and the Norfolk County Council (NCC) in England has leveraged a hybrid approach to help bring “ultrafast” broadband speeds to several remote industrial sites in the county, which uses a mix of wireless networking and Starlink’s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites.

Owners of the Linksys Velop Pro 6E and Pro 7 mesh routers, which are also used by some broadband connected consumers in the UK, are being advised to change the router’s passwords and Wi-Fi network names through an external web browser. The requirement comes after it was alleged that the models could transmit passwords in cleartext during the initial setup.

All of the shares belonging to Swindon-based fibre optic kit and cable supplier AFL Telecommunications Europe have recently been acquired by Italian firm Tratos Cavi Spa, which is a similar supplier. The acquisition deal aims to increase TRATOS’ footprint in the UK alongside its existing electrical cable manufacturing facility in Knowsley.
