Signs of Life as UK Broadband Altnet WhyFibre Spotted Building FTTP

Four years have passed since we first reported on the emergence of a new alternative network (altnet) called WhyFibre (here). The operator had expressed a plan to build a new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across “underserved” parts of South England, but until recently they had appeared to be dormant.

Several credible sources have informed ISPreview that broadband ISP Virgin Media (O2) is gearing up for an important new product launch, which is expected to occur in March 2025 (delays still possible). The expectation is that this will reflect the opening up of their new XGS-PON powered full fibre network in existing coax (cable) areas to live customers.

CEO of Broadband ISP Community Fibre Apologises After Second Outage

Hopefully bad things don’t come in threes. Graeme Oxby, the CEO of London focused full fibre broadband ISP CommunityFibre, has apologised to customers after the operator suffered a second service outage yesterday, which much like the first one appears as if it could have been related to their Domain Name Servers (DNS). But this outage was much shorter.

Network access provider CityFibre, which has so far built their 2.5Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 4.3 million UK premises (4.1m Ready for Service), have confirmed the completion of their “primary” £59m build in the city of Aberdeen (Scotland).

Mobile network operator Vodafone UK has won a key court case against leasing firm AP Wireless (inc. the affiliated Icon Tower company). Some operators believe the firm could risk damaging their roll-out of 5G based mobile broadband technology, such as by pushing up their costs and threatening the viability of future deployments.

Edinburgh-based ISP GoFibre has secured a third contract under the UK government’s £5bn Project Gigabit scheme, which is worth £26.2m (state aid) and will see them expand their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover around 11,000 premises across hard-to-reach rural areas in the Scottish Borders and East Lothian regions.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Vodafone has revealed that they’ve begun “piloting” (no pun intended, we think) a new type of done that is designed to help restore connectivity to mobile masts, such as when their underground data capacity cables are cut or damaged. The drones employ a special optical wireless link.

Liberty Global CEO Updates on Virgin Media’s UK Wholesale Broadband Plan

The CEO of Liberty Global, Mike Fries, has said they’ve made “significant progress” on their plan for opening up Virgin Media’s existing UK fixed line broadband network to wholesale (rival ISPs) via a new business (NetCo) during the first half of 2025 (here). Fries also confirmed they had received “proposals from a handful of the strongest infrastructure investors” for a stake in the biz.

Virgin Media O2 Sees UK FTTP Broadband Builds Surge and NetCo On Track

The latest Q4 2024 results from Virgin Media and O2 have been published, which saw their fixed broadband base grow by +12,000 in the quarter (vs 16.2k in Q3) to total 5,738,900. The provider’s full fibre (FTTP) network also built to another 485,500 premises, primarily via nexfibre (up from 281k in Q3), while mobile connections grew to total 45.7 million.

Virgin Media UK Bring Full Fibre to 14,000 Homes in Filey and Pickering
