Infracapital-backed UK broadband ISP Fibrus has today announced that they’ve extended their multi-gigabit speed capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to reach 1,000 premises in the Cumbria (England) port town of Silloth, which follows similar deployments in locations such as Workington, Parton and Wigton.

Rural network builder and UK ISP Voneus, which aims to cover 370,000 premises via both their gigabit-capable fixed wireless access (FWA) and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband networks, has announced that they’ve begun to build a new gigabit wireless network that will connect thousands of homes on Walney Island in the south of Cumbria.

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today continued to boost the provider’s 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) capacity across the UK by expanding their ongoing roll-out of small cells into Manchester city centre, which is being supported by agreements with both Freshwave and Manchester City Council.

Comparison site Broadband Genie has today published the results of a new study, which analysed 113 business broadband ISPs to find which one delivered the fastest speeds. The results found that Telcom is the UK’s “fastest business broadband provider” – averaging a download speed of 391Mbps and an upload of 357Mbps.

The richest man in Latin America, Carlos Slim (worth around £72bn), has just become one of the largest shareholders in UK telecoms and broadband giant BT Group. The telecoms billionaire has taken out a 3.2% stake in the company, which is said to be worth around £400 million, but his intentions remain unclear.

Alternative network operator Airband, which aims to reach 400,000 UK premises in rural areas via a mix of fixed wireless access (FWA) and full fibre (FTTP) networks by 2026, has been hit with fines and charges totalling more than £11k in Somerset for “failing to ensure the safety of the public while doing work” in the County.

Alternative network and broadband provider Truespeed, which is deploying a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across rural premises in South West England, has revealed that they now cover “over” 100,000 premises RFS (up from 95k in Feb 2024) and are home to 21,000 customers (up from 17k in Aug 2023).

The helicopters have been out in force over Scotland’s Outer Hebrides again, this time to help O2 (Virgin Media) fly-in and install three new 4G mobile phone masts to the remote Uist islands under the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, which aims to extend geographic 4G cover (aggregate) to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025.
