Wessex Internet Engineer Running Fibre into Chamber

Rural UK ISP Wessex Internet has today announced that the first customers have been connected as part of their £14m state aid supported Project Gigabit broadband contract in the New Forest area (Lot 27.01) of Hampshire (England), which is extending their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover “around” 10,500 hard-to-reach premises.

CityFibre has today provided a progress update on their £21m project to roll-out a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across the Lincolnshire (England) city of Lincoln, which began in March 2022 (here) and has now largely completed its build across the wards of Abbey, Glebe, Minster, Castle, Carholme and Birchwood.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has today announced that more than 17,000 additional homes and businesses in the South Yorkshire (England) town of Rotherham can now access their 2Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which was made possible by nexfibre’s network expansion.

Consumer magazine Which? has today published the results of their latest 2024 ranking of home broadband providers, which found that smaller ISPs like CommunityFibre, Zen Internet and Hyperoptic topped the table and eclipsed the biggest providers that now mostly inhabit the bottom half of the table.

Internet service provider Link Broadband, which typically sells FTTP broadband packages via a number of alternative networks, has today become the latest to have their customer base acquired by the Telecom Acquisitions (TAL) group. The deal applies to Link’s customers on the CityFibre network.

Abingdon-based ISP Gigaclear, which specialises in deploying their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network into rural parts England, has today announced that their network now covers 500,000 premises (ready for service) and they’ve also grown their customer base to 100,000 (up from 95k on 22nd Feb 2024).

Broadband and technology giant BT has today announced a new 10-year partnership with media group Global, which will jointly work to convert a further 2,000 of the operator’s legacy payphones and kiosks – across more than 200 UK towns and cities – into brand-new smart Street Hubs, starting in 2025.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has today announced that their 1.8Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network in Northern Ireland is being extended to cover 97% of premises (currently they’re at 87%). As a result, a further £100m investment is being made to reach over 100,000 extra premises.

Alternative broadband operator Freedom Fibre has today announced the completion of their recent merger with InfraBridge-backed VX UK Holdings ltd (VXFIBER). The combined coverage of their open access Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network is now 300,000 premises (up from 285k in Dec 2023).

Network technology firm Adtran and UK broadband giant BT Group today revealed that they’ve conducted Europe’s “first successful field trial” of optical transport in a live research network, using Adtran’s Coherent 100ZR pluggable transceiver – achieving “high levels of spectral efficiency and low power consumption.”
