Civil engineering firm Morrison Telecom Services (MTS), part of the M Group Services, and Telent both appear to have secured another contract (or extension) with Openreach (BT), which will see them support the operator’s expanded £12bn UK deployment of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology.

Multiple credible sources have informed ISPreview.co.uk that the Northern Ireland Executive are set to announced that alternative network ISP Fibrus has beaten BT (Openreach) to be chosen as the main supplier for their £165m Project Stratum programme, which will extend “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage.

Some 400 properties (homes and businesses) in the Northumberland coastal village of Cambois are set to gain access to a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which is thanks to a new partnership between the council-run iNorthumberland project and UK ISP FACTCO (Ecodial).

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre UK has today entered into a new partnership with Renfrewshire Council, which will see them invest £40 million to roll-out their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across homes and businesses in the historic towns of Paisley, Renfrew and Johnstone.

The UK Government has today announced that their Rural Gigabit Voucher scheme has been given a £22.2m top-up boost by a total of 17 local councils in England, which has increased the size of their vouchers and meant that more homes and businesses can now potentially get a 1Gbps capable broadband ISP network installed.

Supermarket giant ASDA has announced that their mobile network division, ASDA Mobile, has taken the big decision to swap their Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) supplier from EE (BT) to Vodafone. The new 5-year deal will see ASDA harness both 4G and ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) connectivity.

The Scottish Government (SG) has informed ISPreview.co.uk that they expect to sign a contract with BT (Openreach) for the delivery of their much delayed LOT 1 area, which forms part of the £579m R100 (Reaching 100%) superfast broadband roll-out programme, “before the end of the calendar year.”

Hull-based UK ISP KCOM has said it will restore broadband data caps on packages with fixed data allowances from 1st October, which were “temporarily” removed earlier this year as part of the provider’s response to support customers who needed to work from home during the COVID-19 lockdown. A new report from global consultancy firm Arthur D. Little has revealed that 10 countries have now made “full fibre” (FTTP / FTTB) broadband ISP networks available to at least 95% of homes, although unsurprisingly the United Kingdom continues to be stuck at the back of the pack but we are showing rapid improvement.

Ofcom has today released their Summer 2020 update for UK broadband and mobile networks, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage has grown to 14% or 4.2 million premises (up from 12% in Jan 2020) and 2% (590,000 premises) are still unable to get speeds of 10Mbps+. Geographic 4G coverage is now 67% (unchanged).

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is developing a new standard called G.fin, which could essentially create a novel fibre optic network inside your home in order to improve the speeds and connectivity directly to residential broadband routers and wireless (WiFi) access points etc.
