After months of speculation, mobile network operator Vodafone UK has today confirmed that they are officially in “discussions” with Three UK’s parent (CK Hutchison Holdings) about the possibility of a merger. Such a deal would give the combined business the “necessary scale” to boost their 5G rollout and “expand” rural broadband connectivity.

Network provider LilaConnect (subsidiary of Swedish provider VXFIBER) has today announced the start of a new build across the market town of Haverhill in Suffolk (England), which will see their “open access” and gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network cover 12,000 premises.

Two of the UK’s most prominent developers of cutting edge fixed wireless access (FWA) and mobile broadband equipment – Curvalux and the Cambridge Broadband Networks Group (CBNG) – have today completed a merger. The two companies will remain independent, with CBNG becoming a subsidiary of Curvalux.

Network operator and UK ISP Giganet has confirmed that their rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network has begun to be extended into the two Wiltshire (England) market towns and civil parishes of Marlborough and Devizes, which will benefit 21,500 homes at a cost of around £23m.

Internet giant Google has announced that they will “begin winding down” their cloud-based remote-play online video gaming service, Stadia, which launched in the UK during November 2019. Despite their best efforts and a lot of publicity, the service simply “hasn’t gained the traction with users that we expected“.

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk has today announced that they’ve added over 90 “new” HD (High Definition) TV channels for “free” to their Netgem powered pay TV (IPTV) platform and its related “TV 4K Box” device, which means that customers should be able to access a total of up to 210 channels.

Ofcom has revealed that 29% of UK households (8 million) – double last year’s 15% – are still having problems paying their phone, broadband and TV bills. In response, they’ve called on major ISPs to reconsider annual price hikes and ordered TalkTalk, Shell Energy, EE, Plusnet and Vodafone to introduce “social tariffs as soon as possible“.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Virgin Media (VMO2) has signed an extended contract with civil engineering firm Avonline Networks (M Group Services), which will see the firm’s engineers continue their relationship with Virgin by helping to extend their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) infrastructure to 23 million UK premises by 2028.

Opensignal has published their biannual September 2022 Mobile Network Experience Report, which measures the 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) services of all four primary network operators – EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK – to determine which delivers the best performance.
