Cambridgeshire-based UK ISP Connect Fibre (Fibre Assets Ltd.), which aims to build a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 100,000 premises across the East of England, has announced that their first non-trial build in the village of Sutton-in-the-Isle will start connecting homes in June.

The latest research from Point Topic has found that world fixed broadband lines grew by 1.53% (19.247 million) in Q4 2021 to end the year on a total of 1.274 billion connections, while the quarterly growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks in the UK remained strong at 12.5% (albeit down from 14.8% in Q2 2021).

Sasho Veselinski, the CEO and Co-founder of UK gigabit-broadband builder and ISP G.Network, has decided to step down from the business for personal reasons. The provider is currently investing £1bn to deploy a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across London and beyond (here).

Surrey-based ISP Box Broadband, which was last year acquired by CommunityFibre (here) and is busy rolling out a full fibre (FTTP) network across parts of South England, has revealed that it “aims to install a Box Broadband router in 30 per cent of homes” across Surrey and Sussex within the next three years.

Some 1,200 customers on Openreach’s broadband and phone network in Wrexham (Wales) have been left disconnected again after the operator’s local network was hit by yet another theft of copper telecoms cable, which appears to have occurred in roughly the same area as two prior thefts earlier this month (here).

CityFibre has today announced that their long-running £35m project to rollout a new full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network across the Cambridgeshire (England) city of Peterborough has now reached “primary” completion, which means that 67,000 homes and businesses (around 85% of the city) can now access gigabit speeds.

Telecoms giant BT (EE) has begun to trial a new “hyper-sensitive quantum antenna technology using excited atomic states,” which represents a new way of detecting radio waves that could find much weaker signals than conventional receivers and thus boost the capabilities of future 5G mobile (broadband) and IoT networks.

Ofcom has published their 2022 survey of UK broadband ISP and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest providers. For example, Vodafone attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (77%), while BT secured the highest (88%). But overall, service quality has improved since COVID-19.

UK ISP BT has today issued their latest biannual study into the progress they’ve made toward delivering the 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, which reveals that they’ve so far built a USO connection to over 4,600 premises, with more than 2,300 further builds in progress.

Broadband ISP Zen Internet UK has once again improved their current Refer-a-Friend scheme, this time by making it so that existing customers who successfully refer somebody they know to the provider will receive an £80 voucher (eGift card), while their referee will get a £20 voucher.

In an unexpected move, Openreach (BT) has today added 56 new locations (towns and villages) to their £15bn rollout for a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network. The operator’s full fibre network has now covered 7.2 million UK premises (inc. 2.3m in the hardest to reach “final third” of the country).

Vodafone UK has today published their latest results (financial Q4 FY22), which reveals that their fixed broadband base has finally passed the million mark to total 1,050,000 (up by +59k in the quarter vs +29k in Q3 FY22). But it’s unclear whether they’ve managed to achieve national availability across CityFibre’s FTTP network, yet.
