Vodafone UK broadband and mobile

Vodafone UK has today published their latest results (financial Q4 FY22), which reveals that their fixed broadband base has finally passed the million mark to total 1,050,000 (up by +59k in the quarter vs +29k in Q3 FY22). But it’s unclear whether they’ve managed to achieve national availability across CityFibre’s FTTP network, yet.

Infracapital-backed UK rural broadband ISP Gigaclear has this afternoon announced that the next two towns to benefit from their commercial rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network will be Winchcombe and Cinderford in Gloucestershire, England.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has named Luke Picken as the winner of its ‘Engineer of the Year 2022’ award. Luke is said to have worked around the clock across South West Scotland to keep people connected to their broadband ISP and phone connections in the wake of Storm Arwen during late November 2021.

Earlier this year we reported that a new operator called Open Infra was gearing up to start rolling out a new 8Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network in the UK (here). Members of our community have now helped us to spot some of their first build sites and packages, in Norfolk and London.

A growing number of broadband ISPs and fibre optic network builders are in the process of establishing a new group called SHIFT (Safety & Health In Fibre Telecoms), which – as the name might suggest – aims to improve the sometimes far from perfect health and safety practices and standards in the UK fibre industry.

UK ISP 4th Utility, which is currently ramping up their rollout of a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to include more homes (SDU) and large residential blocks (MDU), appears to be preparing to launch a cheaper “social tariff” package for those on benefits. But for now it’s only available to one building.

The status of the state aid supported Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) contract with alternative broadband ISP Truespeed, which aims to cover 15,170 premises across Bath and Somerset with a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, remains in doubt after concerns were raised earlier this year over build “delays“.

UK ISP Zzoomm has today announced that their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network has added 7 new market towns across Cheshire, North Yorkshire and Staffordshire to their build plan, which means that they’ve so far announced enough locations to reach 250,000 premises in England.

The Government has announced changes that are designed to improve the quality of street works, not least through more inspections, better quality resurfacing and tougher fines for poor quality road works and leaving behind potholes. But the new rules also include changes to help support the rollout of gigabit-capable broadband.

Ookla, which runs the popular Speedtest.net service for broadband and mobile connections, has announced that they’ve redesigned how they measure latency to give users better access to this metric and to provide more information so that you can better “understand where the bottlenecks in your network’s responsiveness” are.

Unconfirmed reports claim that mobile operators Vodafone and Three UK (CK Hutchison Holdings) have opened early stage talks with a view to reaching an agreement over a possible merger / joint venture of their two businesses in the UK, which would reduce the number of primary network operators from four to three.

A new survey of over 4,000 businesses in England, which was conducted by the National Innovation Centre for Rural Enterprise (NICRE), has claimed that sub-standard infrastructure in rural areas – particularly the lack of quality broadband in many parts – is making it harder for businesses to be “resilient and bounce back from adversity“.

The fruits of this agreement are now starting to show.

CityFibre has announced that they will invest £15m to rollout their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across “nearly every” home and business in the Norfolk seaside town of Great Yarmouth. Construction work on the new full fibre network is planned to “begin this winter“.
