Ofcom has today published their latest Q3 2021 (calendar) consumer complaints study, which identified both TalkTalk and Shell Energy as the providers that attracted the most gripes for fixed broadband services, while TalkTalk also took flak for landline phone services and iD Mobile came top for Mobile moans.

The Government has today confirmed that the new Online Safety Bill will, among many other changes, have another go at introducing a controversial internet age verification system, which will target “all websites” that contain pornographic content. Sites that fail to comply will be blocked by broadband ISPs and mobile operators.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has today announced that it will make the operator’s full range of premium kids entertainment and learning-based programmes – a total of 12 kids pay TV channels (e.g. Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon) – available for all TV customers until 8th March 2022, “at no extra cost.”

The High Court has ordered six of the UK’s largest broadband ISPs – Sky Broadband, BT, Plusnet, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and EE – to block customers from accessing a website called Mixdrop, which is described as a “cyberlocker” that facilitated internet piracy (copyright infringement) by allowing users to stream or download TV and film content.

Gigabit-broadband builder G.Network, which is busy investing £1bn to deploy a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across London and beyond (here), has today become the latest in a small group of UK ISPs to launch a cheaper social tariff (‘Essential Fibre‘) that is aimed at “Londoners on lower incomes“.

A number of weekend reports have claimed that the UK Government is close to securing a significant £10bn investment from the Australian-based Macquarie Group, which would go toward various British infrastructure projects in the digital infrastructure (i.e. fibre broadband and mobile) and energy sectors.

Broadband ISP, pay TV and mobile giant Virgin Media (VMO2) has announced that they intend to mark National Apprenticeship Week (7-13 February 2022) by creating more than 200 new apprenticeship roles across the UK in 2022. The move comes after BT pledged to recruit over 600 apprentices and graduates this year.

The Broadband Delivery UK team have just published a new batch of Public Reviews (PR) and Open Market Reviews (OMR) for additional parts of England – mostly covered by Phase 2 of the Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout. Both aim to identify which areas need state aid support for future builds.

Since April 2017 the UK Government has allowed broadband networks to claim 100% business rates relief on new fibre infrastructure, but this “Fibre Tax” holiday is about to expire and there’s been no indication of an extension. Some operators fear this will add “significant cost and uncertainty to the investment case for full fibre.”

The Government’s new Online Safety Bill (OSB), which tasks Ofcom with tackling “harmful” content online through website bans, fines and other sanctions, has today extended the legislation via a new list of “criminal content” (e.g. online drug and weapons dealing, people smuggling, revenge porn, fraud etc.) for tech firms to remove as a priority.

The BT Group has published their Q3 2021/22 results, which saw Openreach expand the coverage of gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband to 6.44 million UK premises (up by +662K vs +615K in Q2) and BT enter into “exclusive discussions” with Discovery to create a 50:50 joint venture with BTSport and Eurosport UK.
