Customers of broadband ISP Plusnet have informed us that the provider is currently suffering from a “major outage” of their website. At the same time their email platform is rejecting attempts to login, which is probably related to the first issue and means that users cannot access their messages.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published two new discussion papers that set out their “initial thinking” on how UK mobile markets might develop and how networks may need to evolve to meet future demand. But they do not currently propose any major new regulatory interventions or new consumer pricing rules.

The BT Group has this morning outlined new plans to outsource their supply chain operation to logistics firm GXO Logistics, including supporting the Group’s fixed broadband and mobile network build activities by transporting stock and replenishing supply stores, helping to keep 15 million customers connected.

The UK Government’s Building Digital UK team has published an update on the start of their first procurements under the £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout, which is now inviting bids for contracts worth up to £292m to upgrade rural premises across Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland, Cambridgeshire, Dorset and Teesdale.

The UK Government has just published a response to its consultation on the question of how significantly faster broadband ISP networks can be extended to reach the final 0.3% of the country (i.e. under 100,000 premises), which are too expensive for their new £5bn Project Gigabit programme to reach in its current form.

The UK Government has today awarded £4m to support 8 new 2-year long pilots under the Digital Connectivity Infrastructure Accelerator (DCIA) project, which will test ways of making it easier for network operators to access and deploy 5G mobile (mobile broadband) infrastructure on street furniture and public buildings.

The Government has today confirmed that the new Online Safety Bill will, among many other changes, have another go at introducing a controversial internet age verification system, which will target “all websites” that contain pornographic content. Sites that fail to comply will be blocked by broadband ISPs and mobile operators.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has today announced that it will make the operator’s full range of premium kids entertainment and learning-based programmes – a total of 12 kids pay TV channels (e.g. Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon) – available for all TV customers until 8th March 2022, “at no extra cost.”

The High Court has ordered six of the UK’s largest broadband ISPs – Sky Broadband, BT, Plusnet, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and EE – to block customers from accessing a website called Mixdrop, which is described as a “cyberlocker” that facilitated internet piracy (copyright infringement) by allowing users to stream or download TV and film content.
