UK ISP LightSpeed Broadband, which is busy building a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the East of England, has managed to secure another significant funding boost of £60 million. The additional investment comes from specialist investor, Sequoia, and takes their total confirmed pot to £115m.

The Dorset Council (DCC) in England has secured £20,000 of funding from the Local Government Association’s (LGA) Digital Pathfinders programme in order to help it develop a local pilot training programme for fibre engineers, which could help to boost gigabit broadband provision in the county.

Space firm OneWeb, which is owned by a consortium of the UK Government and working to build a new global mega constellation of ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), has confirmed earlier speculation by announcing that the company will invest £2.2bn ($3bn) to shift manufacturing from the USA to UK.

CityFibre has this week carried out their earlier threats by launching an appeal via the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) to challenge Ofcom’s recent approval of Openreach’s “Equinox” offer (here), which introduced a “major” price cut (details) to the incumbents Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products for UK ISPs.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has today hit broadband ISP and TV operator Virgin Media (VMO2) with a fine of £50,000 after they were found to have sent 451,217 direct marketing emails to people “who had previously opted out of marketing communications” from the same operator.

Ofcom has today published their annual monitoring report, which finds that Openreach continues to “operate with a high degree of strategic and operational independence” from BT and there has been positive progress in take-up of their Physical Infrastructure Access (PIA) product by rival broadband ISPs. Only a few small issues remain.

Internet provider TalkTalk has today published the latest volume (4) of their UK “Internet Insights” report, which this time around focuses upon the impact of “silver surfers” and reveals that broadband usage among pensioners has grown by 69% from pre-pandemic levels (driven by increased streaming and online gaming).

The Government has unveiled a new agreement with the four primary mobile network operators, including Vodafone, EE (BT), O2 (VMO2) and Three UK, which among other things will see existing 2G and 3G signals being “phased out” by 2033 (benefitting 4G / 5G services and mobile broadband) and a new target for OpenRAN adoption.

Nokia and CityFibre have teamed up in Glasgow (Scotland) to conduct the UK’s first successful demonstration of a trial that used their full fibre 25G PON kit to fuel backhaul capacity for a 5G mobile (mobile broadband) network, which was used for a holographic call between buildings, teleoperation of a robotic arm and 8K video streaming.

A new Censuswide survey of 2,163 UK adults, which was commissioned by broadband ISP Zen Internet, has found that the proportion of households that have never switched ISP is down to just 18% from 21% year-on-year. This, they claim, reveals that 834k households (3%) switched for the first time in the last 12-months.
