Alternative network ISP Gigaclear has announced that they’re investing £13m to begin an expansion of their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network into rural parts of Dorset (Southern England), which is expected to reach over 18,000 premises (mostly homes and some businesses) across the region.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has today switched-on their last batch of DOCSIS 3.1 network upgrades, which has put an additional 1.1 million homes within reach of “gigabit” download speeds (1130Mbps down and 52Mbps up) and means that c.65% of UK premises should now be covered by “gigabit-capable broadband.”

Leicester-based UK ISP Gigabit Networks, which previously only seemed to focus on business connectivity across the Midlands, has now launched into the residential market by hopping on to CityFibre’s new £45m gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in the city of Derby (Derbyshire, England).

UK ISP Sky Broadband has today reported that internet traffic passing over their network reached its “highest ever peak” of 19.9Tbps (Terabits per second) last night, which was fuelled by customers going online via Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service in order to watch their “exclusive” live Premier League Football matches.

The Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) has warned that new Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast broadband satellites, such as from SpaceX’s Starlink and British-registered OneWeb, will have a “significant” impact on radio astronomers and could put at risk hundreds of millions of pounds of UK investment in space research.

The CEO of BT’s Consumer division, Marc Allera, has revealed that last night’s live streaming of Premier League Football matches, on Amazon Prime Video, pushed internet traffic on their broadband network to its “highest peak yet” of 25.5Tbps (Terabits per second) – that’s about 12% higher than their previous peak set in December last year.

Customers of broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) are this morning reporting that the operator appears to be suffering from a major national outage of their TV platform – impacting their Live TV, On demand, and TV GO service. The issue started at about 10:30am and is currently ongoing.

Ofcom has today opened a new consultation that seeks feedback on how to maximise the long-term value of Terahertz spectrum, which is expected to play a role in future wireless broadband and mobile broadband (6G) technologies and could deliver speeds of 1 Terabits per second (Tbps) or 1000Gbps (Gigabits).

Internet traffic across UK broadband ISPs surged last night on the back of several Premier League Football matches, which were heavily streamed online via Amazon’s Prime Video service. As a result, budget internet provider TalkTalk saw record network traffic, which peaked at 8.1Tbps (Terabits per second).

UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has today confirmed that their entire network of 1.2 million premises in Scotland now have access to gigabit broadband speeds (1130Mbps downloads and 52Mbps up), although this figure includes some areas that have previously already been upgraded to the DOCSIS 3.1 standard.

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has been fined £150k by the UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, after they were found to have provided “inaccurate and incomplete information” during an earlier investigation into the company’s billing issues (here), which separately resulted in the operator being fined £10.5m for overcharging customers.
