Ofcom has today published their fifth annual report into monitoring of the Open Internet Access Regulations (OIAR), also known as “net neutrality” rules. In short, no particular concerns regarding providers’ (broadband ISPs and mobile operators) practices were identified, but there were some interesting little tidbits.

Hull-based UK ISP KCOM has today revealed that the ongoing coverage expansion of their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network has now enabled them to pass 250,000 premises, which reflects their build across both East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire in England.

Openreach (BT) has today announced both a UK coverage expansion of their niche FTTP on Demand (FTTPoD or FoD) broadband ISP product and the introduction of a new FoD “near network commercial trial“, which looks as if it could make it significantly cheaper for some areas to order the full fibre product.

Fixed wireless access (FWA) ISP Derbyshire Broadband, which built a network to serve rural parts of Derbyshire, Cheshire and Lancashire in England (mostly around the Peak District), has finally settled a 4-year-long planning dispute over a 3.5-metre tall antenna (pole) that had stalled their ability to invest and add new customers.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has today raised the prices for some of their legacy internet access packages by £2.50 extra per month. On top of that, some of the UK provider’s calling charges (for those not covered by an inclusive allowance) will also be increasing again from 1st December 2021.

The first of Sky’s customers recently began to receive the operator’s new Sky Glass TV product. But quite a few of the early adopters appear to be running into a variety of problems and bugs with the operator’s attempt at a Sky branded TV, which streams their content via your broadband ISP instead of a satellite dish.

Pay TV solutions provider Netgem this week reported that the decision by Origin Broadband UK to appoint an administrator (here), which came after the ISP struggled to tackle over £20m in losses, resulted in the TV firm taking the decision to “write-off” some £422,000 (500,000 Euros) worth of “unpaid invoices“.

Alternative UK network provider County Broadband has today confirmed that they’ve finally started to build their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the Suffolk market town of Sudbury, which is home to a population of around 13,000.

The Government’s Building Digital UK team has today posted a new evaluation of the previous Superfast Broadband Programme (SFBB), which helped to boost the coverage of “superfast” (24-30Mbps+) ISP networks from c.76% (commercial) to around 97% of premises (i.e. an additional 5.5 million premises) across three phases.

The UK Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) team has today published details on Phase 3 of their £5bn Project Gigabit rollout programme, which will in this phase work to extend 1Gbps capable broadband ISP networks to a further 570,000 premises in rural and semi-rural areas.

Sky UK (Sky Broadband) has today announced that customers of their Sky Q TV and Sky Glass TV service and devices will, by the end of 2021, finally be able to get access to Apple TV+ content. NOW TV users in the UK will also be able to both sign-up and purchase any NOW Membership via the NOW app on Apple’s devices.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today begun to rollout the new 700MHz band across their UK ultrafast 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) network. As part of this, they’re switching on “indoor 5G” at more than 50 sites across the United Kingdom, although they fail to name even one of them.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that they’ve completed the installation and activation of their 4G (mobile broadband) based Emergency Services Network (ESN) in Glasgow’s Subway stations, connecting all 15 Subway stations to their network. But it’s not only the stations and emergency services that will benefit.

Broadband ISP and network builder Upp, which is investing £1bn to cover 1 million premises in East England with their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network by 2025, has signed civil engineering firm makehappen to help support their existing rollout in the Norfolk area.

The main changes this time reflect deregulation and a new Dark Fibre requirement.
