The Welsh Government has today launched a new Open Market Review (OMR) for Wales, which aims to identify any existing or planned commercial coverage of gigabit broadband ISP networks. The review will help to establish the areas where public investment may be needed to deploy the service.

The Government’s Building Digital UK (DCMS) team has today announced that their £5bn Project Gigabit programme will supply an extra £25m for the Project Stratum contract in Northern Ireland, which will enable the rollout of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology to reach an additional 8,500 premises.

The UK Government’s Office for Science has published a new report into increasing the contribution of science and technology for the sustainability of the UK’s health and care system, which among other things advises that the Prime Minister should consider “designating broadband as an essential utility.” But that isn’t a magic fix.

Some 5,000 homes in the large suburban Warwickshire (England) village of Ash Green can now access gigabit broadband speeds from Virgin Media (VMO2), which occurred after the UK ISP extended the reach of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based internet and pay TV network into the area.

A team of researchers, backed by LG Electronics (LG) and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft research organisation, claim to have successfully demonstrated a candidate 6G mobile (mobile broadband) technology that was able to use the TeraHertz (THz) band to send data over a record outdoor distance of 100 metres.

Sky (ISP Sky Broadband), which is owned by Comcast, has reportedly begun UK trials of their long-awaited alternative TV service, which would enable customers to receive the full array of television channels by harnessing an existing broadband connection instead of an ugly Satellite dish.

Openreach (BT) has today given 2 years of advanced notice for a “pricing special offer” on their wholesale Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) and G.fast based hybrid fibre broadband products for UK ISPs (including SOGEA and SOGfast), which once implemented will cover the period from 21st August 2023 to 31st January 2024.

Customers of BT’s consumer broadband ISP, specifically those with one of their “full fibre” (FTTP) packages, can now benefit from a new “speed boost trial”, which will allow them to test out faster download speeds of up to 500Mbps at no extra cost. Customers who decide not to keep the faster tier will be put back on their previous package.

SpaceX has started to set out some tentative early details for the future second generation (Gen2) of their Low Earth Orbit (LEO) focused Starlink ultrafast broadband satellites, which would be larger, faster (data) and could push the size of their mega constellation to total 29,988 satellites.

Customers of UK ISP Sky Broadband (Comcast) are this morning struggling to access any websites hosted by large internet hosting firm Ionos, which also happens to include ISPreview.co.uk’s dedicated server and masses of other websites (e.g. ISPA UK). A routing / peering or DNS issue seems likely to be the cause.
