Over the years’ we’ve seen plenty of justified disputes about the poor placement of broadband street cabinets by UK ISPs and network builders, but we’ve also seen a fair few unjustified ones. The latest example of the latter comes from Harrow, where a seemingly overblown complaint has hit one of Virgin Media’s (VMO2) cabinets.

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has put out a request for members of the public and industry alike to submit nominations for its 2021 “Internet Hero” award, with the eventual winner being announced on 4th November 2021 at an awards ceremony in central London (Sheraton Grand Park Lane Hotel).

Communications provider SIMWOOD and relative newcomer Ociusnet UK have today hinted at separate plans to deploy their own gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP networks, which will aim to cover homes and businesses across parts of the United Kingdom.

Openreach (BT) has today set out the wholesale prices that alternative network (AltNet) builders will have to pay when using the operator’s Ethernet (e.g. EAD) products to feed their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband services to end-users, which caused some annoyance within the market.

Network builder Freshwave, which specialises in deploying 4G and 5G mobile cells that can often be harnessed by other operators, has announced that over 40 new cell sites will be added to their existing coverage in the Croydon area of South London. The same approach will also pave the way for 5G adoption in the future.

The President of SpaceX, Gwynne Shotwell, has announced that the expensive terminal equipment (i.e. dish, mount and router), which ships to UK, USA and European customers who order an ultrafast broadband service via their Starlink constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, is to get significantly cheaper by the end of 2021.

The UK Government has today launched its “back to school and college campaign” to set out the experience that students can expect from September 2021, which among other things includes support for remote education when young people test positive for COVID-19 and need to isolate. A £75 broadband grant forms part of this.

Customer reports from across the world suggest that SpaceX’s new Starlink constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) ultrafast broadband satellites has suffered a major service outage today, which appears to have started just after 1pm UK time and is affected users in the USA and Europe (possibly more).

Vodafone UK has today launched a new initiative that offers SIMs packed with 20GB of free data (mobile broadband), as well as free calls and texts every month for 6-months, to charities across the country. The hope is that this may help some of the 1.5m households – approximately 6% of the population – who live in digital poverty.

Business communications provider aql has launched a new wavelength “Express Service” between the cities of Leeds and Manchester in England, which offers broadband ISPs and mobile operators, among others, access to a 1-100Gbps fibre optic link (capacity) by harnessing Network Rail’s new high-capacity trackside fibre network.

The owner of the InfolinkGazette has reported that UK ISP Origin Broadband (company number 07486862), which back in 2018 had to be rescued by creditors after hitting problems with “substantial bad debts” (here), has filed a Notice of Intention to appoint an administrator after racking up over £20m in losses.

Alternative network provider County Broadband, which is currently deploying a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service across rural parts of England, has apologised to residents in the Aldham and Eight Ash Green areas of Essex after they complained of long and regular service outages.
