The Manchester-based British Cables Company (BCC), which is a manufacturer of various cables, has secured a key multi-million pound contract to supply Openreach with a variety of fibre optic cables to support their ongoing UK rollout of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband and Ethernet services.

UK ISP Cuckoo has today announced that they’ll soon be launching their first Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based home broadband package(s), complete with speeds of up to 1Gbps (Gigabits per second), from October 2021. But unlike most other providers, they’ll do so on a monthly rolling contract.

Ofcom UK has today set out their future spectrum management strategy for the next ten years, which among other things aims to boost support for localised spectrum access (e.g. creating local wireless networks via 5G etc.) and promote greater sharing of existing spectrum in higher frequencies.

An unofficial new website has launched that offers a rough overview of the average (mean) broadband ISP speeds being delivered across the world by SpaceX’s new Starlink constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. Apparently, users in Europe are currently experiencing faster speeds than those in the USA, but the sample size is small.

UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has warned customers of their home broadband service to take extra care with their routers during the summer heatwave because if it “gets too hot” then your connection may “slow down” or even “grind to a halt all together,” said the provider in a new common sense style tips notice.

Full fibre UK ISP Grain Connect, which is supported by £10m from Albion Capital, has started to extend their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to existing homes in North East Lincolnshire (England). The first location to benefit is the large coastal town of Grimsby.

Scientists in Japan have just shattered last year’s world record for the fastest fibre optic internet data transfer speed by using a four core fibre cable to transmit data at 319Tbps (Terabits per second) over a whopping distance of 3001km, which compares with the previous record (here) of 178Tbps over 40km in London UK.

Customers of Virgin Mobile’s (Virgin Media) Pay As You Go (PAYG) plans have been informed that the service is “ending” and it will be gradually phased out between October 2021 and January 2022. During this period, customers will find that their SIM “will stop working … if you don’t take any action.” Talk about harsh.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has this morning announced that they’ve conducted the UK’s “first ever” tests of Nokia’s new next generation 25G PON technology, which has the ability to push download speeds of 25Gbps (Gigabits per second) over a single optical fibre and could one day result in faster FTTP speeds from ISPs.

The London Grid for Learning (LGfL), which currently works alongside Virgin Media Business (VMO2) to supply ultrafast broadband to c.3,000 schools in London (over 1.2 million children), reports that one of VMO2’s fibre optic cables has been “seriously damaged” and is disrupting connectivity to various schools and businesses.
