Business ISP FluidOne Acquired by Private Equity Firm Livingbridge

Business focused UK ISP FluidOne (Rigby Group plc), which are perhaps best known for their broadband and mobile network aggregation solutions (Platform One), has today been acquired by mid-market private equity investor firm Livingbridge for an undisclosed sum.

Little has today published their new 5G Country Leadership Index, which benchmarks 40 countries by an analysis of technical infrastructure and tendency for 5G commercialisation. Overall the UK just creeps into the top ten, placing us on the border between “leaders” and “followers“.

Virgin Media Hints at Launch of Two UK Gigabit Broadband Cities

The boss of European cable operator Liberty Global, Mike Fries, has revealed to investors that they intend to launch “two gigabit cities” in the UK this year via Virgin Media, which as the name suggests could result in related homes gaining access to speeds of 1Gbps (1000Mbps+) using the latest network upgrades.

British registered space company OneWeb, part of a joint venture with Airbus, last night succeeded in launching the first six (OneWeb F6) of their compact low-latency ultrafast broadband satellites into circular Low Earth Orbit (LEO) around the earth at 1000km (close to their operational orbit).

BT Creates Over 1,600 New UK Apprenticeship and Graduate Jobs

Telecoms giant BT has today announced that they’re creating more than 1,600 new apprenticeship and graduate jobs across areas such as engineering, customer service, TV production and cyber-security (inc. within EE and Plusnet). The new recruits will join its over 82,800 strong UK workforce during 2019.

Virgin Media UK to Launch 500Mbps Broadband in Spring 2019

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has published their latest results to the end of 2018 (calendar Q4), which saw their network extend to cover another 144,000 premises and their broadband base grow to total 5,224,600 (up by 21.7K in the quarter vs 36.4K in Q3). But they’re also boosting top speeds from 350Mbps to 500Mbps!

New Ofcom Code of Practice for UK Broadband ISP Speeds to Start

An important change is due to be introduced tomorrow as part of Ofcom’s new Voluntary Codes of Practice on Broadband Speed (VCoP), which will require the largest UK ISPs to give you more information about your estimated line performance and make it easier to exit a contract penalty free (if faults cannot be fixed).

University of Surrey Paper Calls for Changes to Aid UK Rural 5G Cover

A new discussion paper from the University of Surrey, which was produced as part of the UK Government’s 5G Testbed and Trials programme, has warned that it will take more than “competition and public financing” to fill the existing rural mobile coverage gaps with 5G (mobile broadband) services. Broadband Forum Creates First Home Wi-Fi Speed Testing Standard

The Broadband Forum has released the first Indoor Wi-Fi Performance Test Standard (TR-398), which is the result of an industry collaboration to produce a standard for testing Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) performance in the home. This may make it easier to compare WiFi on different ISP routers and devices.

ASA Ban TalkTalk Ads for Misleading Mid-Contract Price Rises Claim

A complaint by UK broadband ISP Plusnet has resulted in the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banning a website and TV advert for TalkTalk’s service, which saw them “misleadingly” claim to be the “only major provider to guarantee no mid-contract broadband price rises on all our plans.” Except they aren’t.

BT Advert Banned for Misleading “UK’s most powerful Wi-Fi” Claim

A complaint by UK cable ISP Virgin Media has resulted in the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banning a couple of BT adverts after they misleadingly claimed their Smart Hub broadband router could deliver the “UK’s most powerful Wi-Fi vs. major broadband providers.” It’s not the first time that’s happened.

FirstGroup and Blu Wireless to Upgrade UK Trains with 5G Broadband

A new partnership between Blu Wireless, Network Rail, the Department for Transport, DCMS and FirstGroup has been announced that could see Gigabit capable 5G Fixed Wireless Broadband being installed on-board trains for South Western Railway, Great Western Railway, the TransPennine Express and Hull Trains.

UK Gov Reject Openreach Proposed Fix for Part Built Fibre in Wales

The United Kingdom has been named in a new study as one of the most inexpensive countries in the European Union for 3G and 4G based Mobile Broadband and call services, which is in no small part thanks to Three UK’s increasingly cheap data tariffs. By comparison the Czech Republic and Cyprus came out as the most expensive.

Gigaclear Founder Creates New UK City FTTP Broadband ISP Zzoomm

The founder and former CEO of UK rural fibre optic ISP Gigaclear, Matthew Hare, has quietly used £1m of his own money to setup a new broadband provider called Zzoomm, which is an alternative network (altnet) that will focus on building 1Gbps+ Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) networks to homes in smaller cities and suburbs.
