The £264m Digital Scotland project, which aims to ensure that 85% of Scottish homes and businesses can access BT’s “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network by the end of 2015 and around 95% by the end of 2017, has revealed the first 8 areas to benefit and most appear to be in the Highlands and Islands region.

A new survey conducted by uSwitch.com has concluded that Ofcom should force broadband ISPs to introduce annual statements, which would give consumers a better overview of their spending and include useful details like the end date of their current contract (31% don’t know when their contract ends).

Some 31,000 customers have now subscribed to a superfast broadband (FTTC/P) connection in Cornwall thanks to BT’s joint £132m public (EU) and privately funded Superfast Cornwall project, which aims to make the operators network available to 95% of local premises by the end of 2014.

A joint team of German researchers based out of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (IAF) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have achieved a world record after they successfully completed a 100Gbps (Gigabits per second) data transmission over a wireless radio network at 237.5GHz. The next target is 1Tbps!

Swedish fibre optic equipment supplier Rala claims to have been hired to design a “fibre focused network” in the Northern United Kingdom that will connect almost 1,000 properties to an ultrafast broadband service. But they won’t say where it is and perhaps with good reason.

The Government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) office has moved to compliment last week’s much debated Industry Day event (here, here and here), which discussed options for extending superfast broadband coverage to the “hardest to reach areas of the UK“, by making a new public survey available for ISPs.

The government of the United Kingdom has so far committed around £1.2bn in public funding to help make fixed line superfast broadband speeds of 25Mbps+ available to 95% of the country by 2017. But the latest ISPreview.co.uk survey of 2,197 people has found that 67.2% of respondents would like even more state aid to be spent.

Microsoft and a variety of Estate Agents have this week criticised the poor performance of broadband in rural parts of the United Kingdom. At the same time the software giant also warned that spending £42.6bn on the High Speed Two (HS2) railway link instead of super-fast Internet connectivity is a “strategic mistake“.

The CEO of budget Internet provider TalkTalk, Dido Harding, has once again reiterated her belief that BT is “acting anti-competitively” in the market for superfast broadband (FTTC) products and she wants them to cut the related wholesale price that it charges ISPs to around £4 +vat a month.

Microsoft has revealed new details about the changes to its Xbox One network architecture, including improvements to its Peer to Peer (P2P) based multiplayer component and claims that the adoption of IPv6 Internet addresses should make the system faster and more secure (IPsec). The Hampshire County Council (HCC) have this week published a full map of their entire £13.8 million project with BT to roll-out superfast broadband (FTTC/P) services to “at least” 90% of local premises by the end of 2015. Sadly new ambiguity has also been added for rural areas.
