The Connect8 campaign has this week hailed the arrival of a 24Mbps+ Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband network in the rural South Oxfordshire village of Stonor, which has been deployed by Village Networks and is also being extended into Pishill (as far as is technically possible).

The state aid supported CSW Broadband project has confirmed that £2m in clawback is set to be reinvested by BT (Openreach) into the local roll-out of “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) connectivity, which means that an additional 3,500 premises in Warwickshire will soon gain access.

In a surprise announcement WarwickNet, which has made its name by building alternative fibre optic based broadband networks (FTTC, FTTP and Leased Lines etc.) to UK business parks, industrial estates and multi-tenancy buildings, has been gobbled up by Somerset-based ISP CableCom.

A new report from Rural England CIC, which claims to offer independent research, networking and information exchange for the country’s many rural areas, has warned that a lack of good broadband is holding back rural consumers in some areas.

Hundreds of homes around the residential suburb of Middleton (Leeds), which last April celebrated after Virgin Media deployed their 300Mbps cable (DOCSIS) broadband network into the area, have faced a long and uncertain wait after the project appeared to stall. But progress is finally being made.

A recent ‘Connecting Capabilities’ report from the Economist Intelligence Unit, which pits the UK, USA and Australia against 11 countries in Asia, has revealed that the UK sits mid-table (ranked 7th) for Digital Infrastructure and is being pulled down by weak telecoms investment. It’s been nearly a year since BT first soft launched their new ‘BT Call Protect‘ service to tackle nuisance calls (here), which allows their home phone customers to divert unwanted calls to a junk voicemail box. The good news is that the “first of its kind in the UK” service is finally available to use.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset project has revealed that their Phase 1 roll-out of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services with BT (Openreach) will miss its target by far more than the “circa 1,700 premises” that was claimed in December 2016; it has actually fallen short by c.11,000.

The Communities Secretary, Sajid Javid MP, has today published the UK Government’s new Local Government Finance Bill that fleshes out their plans for a 100% business rates relief on new 5G Mobile and “full-fibre” (FTTH/P) broadband infrastructure, which is said to be worth £60m.
