One of the ISPs involved in a Government pilot of Satellite broadband connectivity for remote rural areas claims that the effort has been a success and that 61.5% of people who participated in a free trial have now chosen to sign up to a one-year contract. But did they have any other choice?

The Government has confirmed that they’re considering the introduction of a “domestic law” that could prevent Europe’s new Net Neutrality rules from overriding their policy of requiring all of the United Kingdom’s major broadband ISPs to block adult Internet content.

A new study claims that broadband and home phone prices for “loyal customers” (i.e. those who prefer to stay with the same ISP rather than switch) have increased by an inflation-busting 40% since 2011 and are thus paying on average £8.59 a month (£103 a year) more now than they were four years ago.

As expected the European Parliament has, without further change, today given the final approval needed for new rules to be introduced that aim to protect open Internet access (Net Neutrality) from unfair restrictions and put an end to costly mobile roaming charges, but there are plenty of loop holes.

BTOpenreach, which maintains BT’s national UK telecoms and broadband network, will next month launch a slower fault repair service for MPF fully unbundled ISPs (e.g. Sky Broadband and TalkTalk). Now you might well ask, why would any ISP seek slower fault fixing? To save money, of course.

Controversy has erupted after the London Grid for Learning (LGfL), which has a deal with Virgin Media to supply broadband to educational establishments in the city, began blocking schools from viewing emails sent by rival ISP Exa Networks that has been trying to sell its own Internet solutions.

The Digital Scotland scheme, which is working alongside BT to roll-out “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) networks to 85% of premises in Scotland by the end of 2015/16 and 95% by the end of March 2018, has today named the next 40 communities (20,000 premises) to benefit.

The UK telecoms regulator has today confirmed the final details for their “early” 2016 auction of 190MHz worth of high-capacity spectrum in the 2.3GHz (2350MHz to 2390MHz) and 3.4GHz (3410MHz to 3600MHz) bands, which could be used for mobile (4G) and or other fixed wireless broadband services.

UK ISP BT has increased the included Sainsbury’s gift cards on their packages to £75 for standard broadband (up to 17Mbps) and £125 on their superfast up to 38-76Mbps capable BTFinity (FTTC) services, but the one-off “fibre activation fee” has jumped from £35 to £39 (free for Infinity 2 packages).

Fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has announced the start of construction on their new 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in rural Gloucestershire (England) and the Cotswolds, which should reach 6,495 additional premises in the county by the end of 2017.
