EE Incorrectly Charged VAT for Non-EU Mobile Broadband Roaming

Approximately 0.5% of EE’s total customer base in the United Kingdom, specifically those who used Mobile Broadband / Mobile Data while roaming outside of Europe between October 2012 and October 2014, will received a credit refund of between £2 and £80 per customer after the operator wrongly charged Value Added Tax (VAT) on their Data Roaming bundle.

Vodafone UK Says You Don’t Need More Than 20Mbps on a Mobile

The CEO of mobile operator Vodafone UK, Jeroen Hoencamp, has moved to defend the performance of their 4G (LTE) Mobile Broadband network by saying that Internet “speed only gets you so far” and “the reality is that you don’t currently need anything beyond 20Mbps [Megabits per second] on a mobile device“.

Rural UK Landowners Angered by New Mobile Network Coverage Deal

The Country Land and Business Association, which represents tens of thousands of landowners across both England and Wales, appears to have reversed its earlier support for the Government’s plan to improve geographic mobile network coverage (2G, 3G and 4G). At the heart of the problem is a change to regulate the price that landowners can charge telecoms operators for access.

The Government has agreed to drop its controversial push for a National Roaming policy to resolve “partial not-spots” in favour of a new commitment by Three UK, Vodafone, O2 and EE to extend their geographic network coverage (voice and text) of the United Kingdom from 80% today to 90% by 2017. Sadly data (3G and 4G – Mobile Broadband) coverage will only be pushed to 85%.

O2 UK Rejected – BT Confirm EE Selected as Exclusive Acquisition Target

National UK telecoms giant BT has this afternoon moved to bolster their plans for launching a new consumer 4G mobile service in Q2-2015 by confirming that they’ve entered a period of exclusive talks to buy EE (Everything Everywhere) from joint owners Deutsche Telekom (Germany) and Orange (France) which, unless there are complications, effectively rules out a deal with O2.

EE Delivers the Fastest Mobile Broadband Speeds in London for H2 2014

RootMetrics has released its latest study of Mobile Broadband (3G and 4G) performance across the city of London (England) for the 2nd half of 2014, which found that EE remains the faster mobile network operator with median download speeds of 23.15Mbps (up from 17.8Mbps in H1 2014 and 13.6Mbps in 2013). Meanwhile Three UK is the slowest.

Mobile operator Vodafone has expanded its promotional poster campaign with advertising firm JCDecaux by reaching a new agreement that will also allow them to install a new network of small cell 4G (LTE) base stations at the company’s various billboard sites.

TalkTalk’s Talk2Go Allows Home Phone Calls via Mobile Data or WiFi

Customers of TalkTalk’s home broadband service can now download a new Talk2Go app for Android and iOS (iPhone etc.), which allows them to make and receive calls (i.e. using their landline minutes) whilst out and about on 3G or 4G based mobile broadband or over Wi-Fi connections (charged at the same rate as if they were at home).

EE Micro Network Brings Better Mobile Cover to 1,500 Rural Communities

Mobile operator EE has today announced that its new “Micro Network” solution, which is based on technology designed by Parallel Wireless, will be used to expand their 3G and 4G based Mobile Broadband and voice coverage to reach more than 1,500 rural communities, without the need for new cabling, by 2017 (i.e. locations where existing coverage is unreliable and fixed line home broadband is slow).

GBP150m UK Mobile Infrastructure Upgrade Project Makes Slow Progress

Budget broadband and phone provider TalkTalk has confirmed that their Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement with Vodafone will be coming to an end after the ISP signed a new multi-year deal with Telefonica UK (O2) to take over the management of their mobile customer base.

UPDATE Ofcom – UK Mobile Broadband Speeds Reach 15.1Mbps on 4G

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today released its first new study into the national performance of Mobile Broadband services since May 2011. The results show that the average mobile download speed has risen to 15.1Mbps on 4G and 6.1Mbps on 3G (up from a general 1.5 – 2.1Mbps in 2011). The fastest operators were EE and O2.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that the hilltop market town of Minchinhampton in Gloucestershire (England) has officially become the first of 30 initial rural communities to receive 3G based mobile coverage via their new Rural Open Sure Signal Programme, with many more soon to follow.
