The European Commission has published its annual report into the coverage of superfast broadband (Next Generation Access) services around the EU, which again shows that the United Kingdom is making good progress on 30Mbps+ capable Next Gen (NGA) service delivery but still lags miles behind most other EU28 countries in terms of pure fibre optic connectivity (FTTH/P/B).

National UK telecoms giant BT has this afternoon moved to bolster their plans for launching a new consumer 4G mobile service in Q2-2015 by confirming that they’ve entered a period of exclusive talks to buy EE (Everything Everywhere) from joint owners Deutsche Telekom (Germany) and Orange (France) which, unless there are complications, effectively rules out a deal with O2.

RootMetrics has released its latest study of Mobile Broadband (3G and 4G) performance across the city of London (England) for the 2nd half of 2014, which found that EE remains the faster mobile network operator with median download speeds of 23.15Mbps (up from 17.8Mbps in H1 2014 and 13.6Mbps in 2013). Meanwhile Three UK is the slowest.

Mobile operator Vodafone has expanded its promotional poster campaign with advertising firm JCDecaux by reaching a new agreement that will also allow them to install a new network of small cell 4G (LTE) base stations at the company’s various billboard sites.

Vodafone has today confirmed that customers of their Red 4G (LTE) based mobile broadband, calls and text tariffs in the United Kingdom will now also be able to make use of the same connectivity in 40 destinations worldwide.

A press and website advert for Relish’s fixed wireless 4G broadband network in central London has been banned after BT successfully complained that their promotion used a “misleading” comparison with one of their own packages and also advertised an incorrect price for the ISPs business deal.

Customers of TalkTalk’s home broadband service can now download a new Talk2Go app for Android and iOS (iPhone etc.), which allows them to make and receive calls (i.e. using their landline minutes) whilst out and about on 3G or 4G based mobile broadband or over Wi-Fi connections (charged at the same rate as if they were at home).

Data focused mobile operator Three UK has announced that their new 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network is, after its first year of physical deployment work, now available to 48% of the United Kingdom and their next enhancement could help to significantly improve that figure.

Customers of Relish’s new superfast 4G (LTE at 3.5 / 3.6GHz) based fixed wireless broadband service in central London, which offers an “unlimited” connection with Internet speeds of up to 50Mbps from just £20 per month (no line rental required), have continued to complain about frequent connection drops and unresponsive support.

Mobile operator EE has today announced that its new “Micro Network” solution, which is based on technology designed by Parallel Wireless, will be used to expand their 3G and 4G based Mobile Broadband and voice coverage to reach more than 1,500 rural communities, without the need for new cabling, by 2017 (i.e. locations where existing coverage is unreliable and fixed line home broadband is slow).

The Government’s £150 million Mobile Infrastructure Project (MIP), which aims to improve mobile coverage in areas where there is currently none (i.e. benefitting around 60,000 UK premises out of 80,000 known not-spots), is finally starting to talk to some of the local authorities that it originally expected to have completed by the end of 2013.

Hold on to your hats because Three UK’s Hong Kong based parent, Hutchison Whampoa Ltd., has reportedly decided to counter BT’s preliminary talks to buy O2 or EE by preparing to make a similar bid of its own. Suddenly there’s the prospect that BT might need to pay more than it planned.

The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) has put their weight behind the Government’s proposal to tackle partial mobile not-spots across the United Kingdom by requiring major mobile network operators to adopt a controversial national roaming policy, which some fear could also stifle future investment.

Mobile operator EE has teamed up with the Radio 1 DJs and YouTubers Dan and Phil to offer customers a special “No strings, No contract” 4G Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) SIM that comes with 100GB (GigaBytes) of free Mobile Broadband data for use each month (details here), although naturally there is a catch or two.

Mobile operator Lycamobile UK appears to have become a serial offender after the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banned, for a third time no less, a “misleading” promotion on their website that claimed to offer “UNLIMITED DATA NOW WITH 4G” when in fact the data usage was effectively capped to just 5GB (GigaBytes).

As widely expected Ofcom has today announced a decision to make radio spectrum in the 700MHz band, which is currently used for Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT) channels, available for use via future Mobile Broadband (4G, 5G) services by the start of 2022. Get ready to re-tune your TV or set-top-box.

Mobile operator Three UK has been slowly phasing out unlimited Mobile Broadband tethering support from their “all-you-can-eat” data tariffs since they introduced new plans earlier this year (here) and now existing subscribers of the legacy ‘One Plan’ are being pushed onto new contracts too, which cap tethering usage.
