Ofcom’s publication of a final set of information about the recent 4G (LTE) spectrum auction (800MHz and 2.6GHz) at the end of last week has revealed that Mobile Networks Operators (MNO) made total “theoretical” bids of roughly £5.2 billion or around £3bn more than the actual total of £2.368bn.

Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited (DMSL), which was setup by mobile operators and the government to tackle any Digital Terrestrial TV (Freeview) related reception problems caused by interference from the new 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband services in the 800MHz band, have announced a pilot project to assess the issue in two towns.

The latest post-4G auction study from Analysys Mason estimates that Vodafone, not EE, now has the most valuable mobile spectrum portfolio in the United Kingdom (worth over £2bn). The operator also spent £802m to secure several slices of the 800MHz and 2.6GHz band (here) in order to roll-out superfast Mobile Broadband services.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today issued radio spectrum licences to the five winners of their recent 4G auction for the 800MHz and 2.6GHz bands. The move means that BT, O2, Three UK, EE and Vodafone are now “free to deploy” related LTE superfast Mobile Broadband networks.

One For All, which produces TV related equipment, has announced the launch of two new indoor TV aerials that include a built-in 4G (LTE) filter that it claims will reduce interference from related Mobile Broadband signals in the 800MHz spectrum (due to roll-out around the UK from late spring 2013).

Telecoms analyst firm Point Topic has suggested that internet access solutions which attract a low marginal cost, such as Mobile Broadband, Satellite and WiFi, are now likely to play a bigger then expected part in the UK and Europe’s strategy for expanding broadband coverage into rural areas.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today confirmed that BT, Vodafone, O2, Three UK and EE have all won slices of the 800MHz and 2.6GHz radio spectrum bands as part of its 4G (LTE or WiMAX) superfast Mobile Broadband auction. Sadly ISP MLL Telecom and HKT UK (PCCW / UK Broadband) didn’t win anything.

Consultancy group Analysys Mason has warned that the UK government’s plan to make faster 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband services available to “at least 98%” of the country by the end of 2017 may not work as a viable “replacement” for slower legacy copper based fixed line services in rural areas.

RootMetrics has posted the results from 95,672 separate speedtests of EE’s new 4G (LTE 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network in the UK cities of Liverpool, Cardiff and Sheffield. The study found that EE was broadly living up to its promise of delivering internet speeds that range from 8-12Mbps (Megabits per second).

The Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited (DMSL) group, which was created to help some of the 2 million+ UK homes that could suffer a loss of Digital Terrestrial TV (Freeview) when the new 4G based Mobile Broadband services go live via the 800MHz band, has setup a new website to help inform and advise those affected.

Cisco’s latest forecast has predicted that online video services will represent 66% of global Mobile Broadband traffic by 2017 (up from 51% in 2012), which will help to push total mobile data use from 0.9 Exabytes per month (i.e. 885 Petabytes) now to 11.2 EB in just five years’ time and outpace global fixed data traffic.

Mobile network operator EE has announced the next stage of its urban focused 4G roll-out across the United Kingdom, which will see a further 27 towns being enabled to support the new superfast Mobile Broadband technology by June 2013 (i.e. 65 UK towns and cities in total).

Mobile operator Three UK (Hutchison 3GUK Ltd.) has announced that their forthcoming 4G (LTE) based “ultrafast” Mobile Broadband network will, unlike its rivals, offer the service across all existing and new price plans “without customers needing to pay a premium fee to upgrade“.

As expected the UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to allow 4G (LTE) superfast Mobile Broadband services to also be delivered over the 900MHz, 1800MHz (EE are at present the only one allowed to do this) and 2100MHz radio spectrum bands that are currently used for a mix of existing 2G and 3G services.

BTOpenreach has announced plans to conduct a proof of concept trial for its new small cell based Mobile Infill Solution. The service aims to leverage BT’s existing fixed line UK telecoms network to provide mobile services into parts of the country that suffer from “non-existent or patchy” coverage (i.e. “rural areas“).

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today opened the bidding process for its auction of 4G (LTE or WiMAX) superfast Mobile Broadband radio spectrum (800MHz and 2.6GHz). A total of seven firms are bidding, although the main focus will be on the four primary mobile phone operators.
