Low-cost mobile provider iD Mobile (Currys), which harnesses Three UK’s national 4G and 5G network via a virtual operator (MVNO) partnership, has today moved to help mark its 10th anniversary by launching a new customer rewards platform called ‘iD Perks‘ – offering various discounts from household names like Disney, Booking.com, Morrisons and The AA etc.

Industry trade body Mobile UK, which represents Three UK, EE, O2 and Vodafone, has published a new report from Assembly Research that calls on the government to “secure the UK’s economic growth goals and maintain its competitive standing” by supporting their familiar wish list of demands to help boost the roll-out and coverage of mobile networks (4G, 5G etc.).

Mobile operator Three UK has notified the remaining customers still on their old Relish Wireless (Three Broadband) service in Swindon (Wiltshire, England), which was originally acquired from UK Broadband Limited in 2017 (here), that it is finally due to be retired by the end of May 2025. But the news came as a surprise to some users.

Contract-free mobile operator VOXI, which is the virtual network provider (MVNO) sibling of Vodafone, has launched a new promotion that offers their entry-level £10 per month SIM-Only plan with 80GB (GigaBytes) of mobile broadband data (usually 20GB), as well as unlimited access to social media, calls, text and picture messages.

Ofcom Spring 2025 Data – Gigabit Broadband Covers 27.24 Million UK Premises

Ofcom has today published its Spring 2025 update on UK fixed broadband and mobile coverage, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) lines now reach 74% of homes (up from 69% in July 2024), while 86% are within reach of a gigabit network (up from 83%) and 62-85% of premises can get an outdoor 5G signal (up from 61-79%).

New customers who fancy giving Vodafone’s mobile network (4G and 5G) a try in London can now do so for free for seven days as part of a new eSIM based trial, which will give you 50GB of data (mobile broadband), 500 minutes and 500 texts and all without changing your number. But various other cities and locations will soon be able to do the same.

Mobile operator O2 UK (Virgin Media) has today announced, in a “railway first“, that 4G and hopefully 5G connectivity too (mobile broadband) has received a “major boost” after the London North Eastern Railway (LNER), Network Rail and the private sector completed deployment of a new custom-built Distributed Antenna System (DAS).

Mobile operator Vodafone has been awarded a second contract as part of its work with the Data Communications Company (DCC), which is working to upgrade existing Smart Meters in UK homes with Toshiba’s new 4G Communication Hub (details). Telecoms giant BT has today signed a new “multi-million-pound” deal with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), which will see EE provide 34,000 mobile connections to support workers and real-time reporting on issues from flooding to farming disease outbreaks across England, Scotland and Wales.

BT Consults on Closure of its Londonderry Office by End of 2025

Telecoms and broadband giant BT has confirmed that, as part of their ongoing UK programme to modernise and consolidate the number of offices they have – shrinking them from around 300 to just 30 locations, they’ve begun a consultation on the closure of their Londonderry office. The move, which could be implemented by the end of 2025, puts around 140 jobs at risk.

Revolut to Expand from Travel eSIMs into Cheap UK Mobile Operator

Primary UK Mobile Operators Beat Virtual MVNOs for Broadband Speed

Network benchmarking firm Opensignal has today published the result of a new study that analyses the performance of Mobile Network Operators (MNOs like EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK) and then compares that with their many virtual operators (MVNOs like Sky Mobile, iD Mobile, Smarty etc.). Overall, the primary operators deliver faster data speeds than virtual providers.

April 2025 Progress Update on BT’s 10Mbps UK Broadband USO

UK ISP BT has published their first biannual progress update for 2025 on their delivery of Ofcom’s somewhat maligned 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband. The provider has so far helped to build a USO connection to over 8,411 premises (up from 8,248 in Oct 2024), with 349 further builds in-progress (up from 215).

A couple of weekend newspaper reports have stated that the Fern Trading (Octopus Group) backed Y Corporation appears to still be gearing up to launch a new UK mobile operator of their own, which would be backed by a virtual operator (MVNO) agreement with Three UK. But readers of ISPreview will know that they already tried this last year (here) – leaving many early adopters confused.

NFU Warn Farms Being Excluded from UK Gigabit Broadband Rollout by Cost

The National Farmers Union, which represents over 44,000 Farmers and Growers in England and Wales, has warned that a good proportion of farms in rural parts of the country are still being excluded from the ongoing deployment of gigabit-capable broadband ISP technology – often even when the network covers the local road.
