EE UK Launch Nintendo Switch 2 Bundles for Pay Monthly Mobile Customers

Customers of mobile and broadband ISP EE may like to know that the provider has today soft launched a new range of “exclusive” Nintendo Switch 2 bundles for users to add to their existing packages. The deals are set to become available via the operator’s EE Store tomorrow (5th June 2025) to coincide with global availability.

O2 UK Warn Customers with Incompatible Mobiles as 3G Switches Off

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) recently started emailing customers with handsets that are “not fully compatible with the UK’s 4G or 5G network” in order to notify them of their imminent 3G switch-off and offer an upgrade. But it’s worth noting that these notices will sometimes still get sent to people with technically compatible phones too, often leading to confusion.

Streetwave Test Mobile Data Performance on the Elizabeth Line Train

Network analyst firm Streetwave has today shared the results from a recent survey they conducted, which examined the coverage and performance of 4G and 5G mobile (broadband) networks – including EE, Three UK, Vodafone and O2 – for people travelling on part of the Elizabeth Line (train) from Heathrow Airport (T 2/3) to Canary Wharf.

50 Government Funded 4G Mobile Mast Upgrades Now Live Across UK

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has this morning revealed that a total of 50 government-funded rural 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have now gone live across England (9 masts), Wales (28) and Scotland (13) as part of the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project. But 50 more will follow by March 2026.

The UK Government’s Minister for Telecoms, Sir Chris Bryant, this week provided more details to parliament on how Ofcom would soon improve the accuracy and relevance of their mobile coverage maps, which made particular reference to the minimum required 4G mobile broadband speed (currently 2Mbps) – this will shortly be more than doubled to 5Mbps.

Mobile network operator Three UK has today completed their trial of OpenRAN (O-RAN) technology in the city of Glasgow (Scotland). The test, which marks one of the UK’s first deployments of the technology in a dense urban environment, delivered “impressive results” with both 4G and 5G data speeds doubled at peak times.

The BT Group has today published their biannual full year (H2 FY25) results to March 2025, which reveals that Openreach’s full fibre (FTTP) network added 2.2 million premises to their UK coverage in H2 (up from 2.1m in H1) to cover 18.08m (4.9m in rural areas) and will accelerate its rollout by 20%. But broadband line losses to rivals hit 243k in the last quarter (up from 208k).

Mobile Networks Call on Gov to Help Bring 5G Upgrades to 6,200 UK Sites

The Mobile Infrastructure Forum (MIF), which represents the main providers of mobile network infrastructure for EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK (i.e. Cellnex UK, Cornerstone, MBNL and WIG), has today called on the government to resolve the issue of 6,200 UK sites (masts etc.) that are “stuck in legislative limbo” and preventing 5G upgrades.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has today ordered mobile operator EE (BT) to ensure that the “unlimited data” (mobile broadband) claims on their website, which apply to various 4G and 5G mobile plans, are directly qualified with the limits expressed in their associated Fair Usage Policy (FUP).

Vodafone Top 1.61 Million UK Broadband Customers as Mobile Declines

Mobile network operator and UK ISP Vodafone has today published their Q4 FY25 financial results, which confirms that their fixed line broadband base grew by a healthy 61,000 in the last quarter to total 1.61 million customers (down from 72k added in Q3 2024). But their mobile base fell again to total 18.175m (down by -125k in Q4 vs -174k in Q3).

Broadband and Mobile Traffic Volume Growth Has Slowed to a Crawl

A new report from analyst firm Enders Analysis, which was recently shared with ISPreview, has revealed that broadband traffic volume growth across most developed countries has “slowed to a relative crawl” to become the “new normal” (i.e. falling from 30%+ for many years and now at 10-15%). The story is similar for mobile (4G, 5G etc.) services (falling to 5-10%).

Satellite operator Viasat and German car manufacturer BMW claim to have demonstrated the ability for vehicles to connect over satellite (non-terrestrial networks) for emergency messaging and hazard warnings. This is designed to complement modern terrestrial 4G and 5G mobile network connectivity solutions (many cars already have something akin to the latter).

The High Court in London has rejected an application by mobile operator EE (BT) for interim injunctive relief against satellite provider Avanti Broadband, which had “threatened to withdraw” its backhaul services – used to help supply data capacity to some of the remotest rural UK mast sites – unless the mobile operator agreed to pay a “substantially increased rate“.

Spectrum Policy Forum Looks to Future of TV Spectrum for UK Mobile After 2034

A new report from the cross-industry UK Spectrum Policy Forum (UKSPF), which was conducted in collaboration with consultancy firm Coleago, has examined what might become of the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) spectrum bands after 2034 (currently used for digital TV, PMSE and others). For example, if auctioned to mobile operators, the IMT600 band could raise up to £980m.
